We left off with a bang as Penguin and Butch (Robin Lord Taylor and Drew Powell) showed up to save Gordon (Ben McKenzie) from the former Theo Galavan (James Frain) turned monstrous Azrael, by blowing him up in one of the craziest moments in the show’s history. Jim and Harvey (Donal Logue) know Dr. Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong) is dirty but he manages to stay one step ahead, hiding his monster lab in a secret basement at Arkham. At Bruce’s behest, Selina (Camren Bicondova) sneaks into the asylum. While looking for answers she stumbles into the lair of the Firefly, her old pal Bridget (Michelle Veintimilla), who set herself ablaze with her flamethrower. Like Azrael not remembering his past, Firefly doesn’t remember Selina from the Strange brainwashing, and looks to light the cat up.

SPOILERS BELOW…

Harvey releases his statement in hilarious fashion about the Azrael situation. “Since the suspect is now meat dust, a positive identification would prove difficult.” Gordon wants Harvey to go after Strange, but his hands are tied. With Selina trapped in Arkham trying to avoid becoming well done, Bruce (David Mazouz) goes to Jim for help. Strange is amassing an army of “returned,” all mixed with animal DNA and given new identities. Next on the list, a certain former mob boss in Gotham, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith).

Bruce brings together a team to break into Arkham. As his family is a top contributor, he will arrange a private tour of the facilities with his tech guy Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk). He will alert Gordon, who will sneak in amidst the distraction and contact Bullock when the time is right. Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) is not having a great time in Arkham after his escape was foiled. He bargains with Strange’s associate, Miss Peabody, to let him help Strange stop Gordon from getting the revenge he’s been looking for.

Strange admires Bruce’s boldness in seeking the one on one meeting. B.D.Wong’s slow and cold delivery of his lines make him ooze with evil. He’d be right at home as a Cold War era Bond villain. He teases Bruce in a subtle way, constantly bringing up the parents whose deaths he orchestrated. Meanwhile Lucius marks the area where the secret elevator is, and Gordon sneaks inside dressed as a guard, trying to make it down to monster lab so he can expose Strange. Unfortunately, Strange sees through the ruse and the Arkham guards capture all three.

Strange, like a Bond villain is actually just a cog in the wheel, working for mysterious masked benefactors. When he assures them of his progress, bringing back Fish Mooney memories intact, she orders him to destroy all traces of Indian Hill and move to the “upstate facility.” Fish, it seems, has more than just her memories. She touches a guard and is able to force him into making her a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s only a matter of time before her new powers of manipulation make her a force to be reckon with.

Selina is forced into servitude to the “Goddess of Fire,” Bridget. It’s either that or death by burning. With Bruce, Jim, and Lucius now trapped alongside Selina, Alfred goes to Bullock and the acting chief of the Gotham PD sends an assault team to Arkham to deal with the situation. They’d better hurry because Fox and Bruce are held captive in a gas chamber by Nygma, and Strange locks a Saw-style trap on Gordon’s head that allows for the copying of his identity, which is then copy and pasted onto the face of one of Strange’s zombie monsters. With an evil Jim Gordon, a refreshed Fish, and a psychotic Nygma, Strange and Arkham are poised for a major battle against the GCPD.

After the “Holy Sh*t!” moments of last week, this week’s episode is more reserved, but delights in the true evil of its villains. Wong is fantastic, and Cory Michael Smith continues to plays a phenomenal Nygma. I can’t wait to see him rock a green question mark laden bodysuit! This also builds to a major showdown next week when the second season comes to a close.

Gotham is on tonight, Monday May 16th at 8:00PM ET on FOX.
