Last week on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, they had successfully captured Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). However, he played mind games and then of course escaped. Bumbling Ray (Brandon Routh) was goaded into opening the door when Savage taunted him about Kendra. They captured him again and brought him to the Time Masters… who released him and arrested the heroes, except for Sarah (Caity Lotz) and Snart (Wentworth Miller) who got away, and Jax (Franz Drameh), who had been sent back to 2016 to stop his aging process, caused by a blast of radiation.

Spoilers below.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 1.15 “Destiny” review: The episode opens with one of the first scenes of the season – when Rip tells them they have a decision to make about changing the future. After they disperse, Dr. Stein has a Doc Brown Back to the Future 2 moment with future Jefferson.

Back in current reality, the Legends are imprisoned at the Vanishing Point. The Time Masters are working with Vandal Savage. Martin Donovan plays Zaman Druce, the leader shows Rip that without Savage uniting Earth under one supreme ruler, Earth gets conquered by an alien planet in the future. Rip thinks he’s crazy to believe Savage is our only hope.

Sarah and Snart are the only two not captured, and argue over saving the others or fleeing in the Wave Rider. Druce takes Rip to the Oculus, the Time Masters’ secret weapon, that not only shows all time but allows them to manipulate it. He tells Rip that they’ve been helping Savage from the beginning, and even the Legends have been manipulated every step of the way. When Ray doesn’t believe him, Rip informs him of the unfortunate news, that he witnessed Ray’s death in the Oculus.

Future Jefferson and past Stein are trying to work together to figure out a way to fix things. Meanwhile, back at the Vanishing Point, the Time Masters use electric shock and torture to turn Mick Rory back into Kronos, and send him to hunt the remaining Legends. Sarah and Snart get Gideon, the ship’s computer to pull a prank on the Time Masters (think Goldblum and Will Smith at the end of ID4). This allows Snart to swoop in for a rescue, until Kronos enters for another round of Snart vs. Rory… until Rory turns on the Time Masters and uses his massive Kronos boot to stomp him to death; a death even Snart grimaces at.

“Get me out of this stupid robot suit!”

Together and escaped from the Vanishing Point, they set a new plan, get the Oculus. Everyone gets in a great quip as they agree to their “suicide mission” plan, especially Rory. Watching Purcell and Miller makes us want to binge Prison Break. Of course Zaman Druce and the Time Masters stop them because “it’s destiny.” Destiny proves bendable as Jefferson shows up and blasts the Time Masters allowing Rip’s plan to come to fruition. Palmer as the Atom is in charge of destroying the Oculus. Rip knows Ray destroying the Oculus is what gets him killed, but Ray is willing to play the role of martyr. Mick isn’t willing to let him, so he knocks him out and takes his spot. He wants the ultimate revenge on the Time Masters after all. Rip shrinks the Atom and puts him in his pocket (that’s adorable). Snart and Sarah refuse to leaves Mick, and Snart apologizes before KO-ing his partner and taking his spot as team martyr. Sarah pays off their tension with a kiss before hauling off with Mick, and Snart’s sacrifice destroys the Oculus and the entire Vanishing Point. “Ain’t no strings on me!”

Without the Oculus, Rip is flying without a map. Gideon is able to confirm that Savage was successful at killing his family, so victory is bittersweet with personal and professional losses. Savage is informed by the Masters that the Oculus is gone and thus so is their ability to aid him. Kendra laughs at him, and surely it seems without their help, Savage is likely to be apprehended sooner than later. But he does have a time traveling ship capable of allowing him to change time himself and thus not have to rule from one fixed position.

Nice set-up for season 2.

The bonding between characters was excellent this episode. Sarah and Snart and their sexual tension, Mick and Ray and their buddy cop style banter, Jefferson and Dr. Stein growing as a unit… this is why I love this show – so many good intriguing characters, so it never gets bogged down.

The season finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Thursday, May 19th at 8:00pm on The CW.
