Last week on Outlander, Jamie (Sam Heughan) finally told Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) the whole crazy time-traveling story, after he got angry about the duel being called off. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) went to warn Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) about the king gunning for practitioners of the dark arts. They set up fake smallpox at the Comte’s (Stanley Weber) ship, and even had Murtagh play bandit when that did not work. Jamie went to duel with Randall (Tobias Menzies), which resulted in Claire screaming, bleeding, and fainting, Jamie sticking a sword in Randall’s groin, and both men arrested.

Spoilers below.

Outlander 2.7 “Faith” review: It opens in 1954 with Claire and her daughter in a library, before we are taken back to the 18th century hospital. Claire is foggy while they work on her bloody body. She has lost her Faith, her baby, “Where is my baby?” Her fever is high. A priest comes to give her last rites just in case. Master Raymond sneaks in and asks her what she sees – “two wings.” The placenta was stuck and festering. He puts his hands on her and the fever drained. They did the scene where he pulled in infection out from inside her. It was portrayed much less graphic than in the novel, but I am glad that was a part of it. It was necessary.

“I don’t know what he did or how he did it but he healed me.” He saved her life for a 2nd time and left.

Jamie is in the Bastille for dueling. He did not kill Randall. She tells Mother Abigail that Jamie betrayed her. Finally, she goes home, broken, leaning on Fergus, who tries to take care of her. She hears Fergus having a nightmare. He tells her what Randall did to him, raping him. And Jamie found them, challenging Randall to a duel. Claire realizes now why he broke the promise. She goes to Mother Abigail for an audience with the king. She says the king may expect to lie with her, but Claire doesn’t care.

She gets her audience. Louis (Lionel Lingelser) is intrigued. He wants a small favor. And it’s not what we all think (at first). He wants her to judge between the Comte and Raymond for sorcery. Although the Comte admits to poisoning her, and calls her a witch, she still can’t bring herself to condemn him to death. Louis calls for a snake (because, obviously), but Claire asks for her way… poison. She gives them the cascara. Raymond survives and slips poison into the cup. The Comte is dead.

The king then has her pay with sex – a couple of thrusts and done. He will give her the pardon for Jamie and arrange for one in England as well.

Jamie comes home. They are both ravaged with pain. “I did hate you. Mother Hildegarde let me see her.” Claire had rocked her dead baby all day. Louise came to see her, and helped her let Faith go. Not shallow, that friend.

“I hated you but it was me who put Frank in front of my family. Its not your fault… it’s my fault.”

One more thing…

Claire: “I slept with the king to buy your freedom.”
Jamie: “You did it to save my life, just like I gave myself to Randall to save you.” True, but I still don’t think normal husbands would be so understanding.

It’s time to go home to Scotland.

This was the saddest episode. No battles or duels or real fights (except in flashback). The melancholy music followed the characters around like a shroud. The Frasers have a burden on their hearts. France has been a terrible experience for our couple, who started off there with such hope. They seemed to accomplish what they had first set out to do, which was stop the Jacobite funding. They may be off to Scotland, but that brings them closer to the looming threat of Culloden. I am happy they are going back to Jenny and Ian (Laura Donnelly and Steven Cree) and their brood.

Although sad, this episode really brought out the shine in some of the other characters as well. Have we ever really noticed Magnus before? The Comte turned complex at the moment of his death, and even the executioner seemed layered. The story really brought out the best in every character. I also look forward to Scotland, and the return of Murtagh.

Outlander airs Saturday nights at 9:00pm ET on Starz.
