‘Captain America: Civil War’: A 12-Year-Old’s Thoughts

Movie Review: Captain America: Civil War, starring Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

Captain America: Civil War is the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ongoing film series started back with Jon Favreau’s 2008 Iron Man, and has hit some incredible highs and some modest middles… honestly none of the films are bad, some just mildly disappointing. Directed again by the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier), the new film is the most challenging of the MCU thus far, asking the audience to choose sides over the Sokovia Accords, a treaty signed by hundreds of nations that would put the Avengers under the control of the UN. This is in response to all the past events in the series, but specifically an Avengers mission in Nigeria that stopped a sinister plot, but left many civilians dead. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is sick of watching his technology kill innocents, so he is firmly pro-Accords, whereas Captain America (Chris Evans) believes the whole point of the Avengers is to do what they feel must be done without interference. Things get more complicated when Cap’s old best friend and former brainwashed Hydra assassin Bucky, aka The Winter Soldier, (Sebastian Stan) is blamed for a terrorist attack.

Civil War marks the beginning of the MUC’s Phase 3, which includes a whopping 10 films, including standalones for Doctor Strange (November 2016), Spider-Man (July 2017), and Black Panther (July 2018), as well as sequels for Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. By the time Phase 3 gets to the two-part climactic Infinity War saga in 2018-19, my son will be a 15-year-old high schooler. As for now, 12-year-old Brandon is obsessed with all things MCU. After seeing Civil War for a third time Thursday night, we got into a near hour-long Q&A about the film, the characters, and all things MCU. So I decided to track some of our talk in a little interview to give the pre-teen perspective.

Spoilers if you haven’t seen Captain America: Civil War yet…

Q: What are your top 5 MCU movies going into Civil War?

5. Ant-Man
4. Iron Man
3. Avengers
2. Guardians of The Galaxy
1. Captain America: Winter Soldier

Q: What do you think about Captain America: Civil War?

I thought it was a very good movie that had a great plot. I also liked the fact that they many fight scenes. This movie kept me intrigued the whole time.

Q: Favorite scene?

It is hard to pick out a favorite scene because I loved the movie so much. I narrowed it down to three choices. When Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers kiss, and Bucky and Sam are smiling and nodding their heads. Another favorite scene in the movie was when Black Panther was chasing Bucky, and Captain America was chasing Black Panther in the tunnel. My last favorite scene was at the airport where they have the big stand-off.

Q: Team Cap or Team Iron Man, and why?

I was Team Iron Man before I ever saw it, but then as it narrowed down to the end of the movie I was Team Cap. This is because I realized all Cap was ever trying to do was keep the Avengers together and protect the Earth. And also that he tried to defend Bucky in any way that he could. I also understand why Iron Man was so mad. One of his best friends almost died, and he watched Winter Soldier murder his parents on a TV screen. Sure, Bucky was under the control of Hydra, but he did it.

Actually, I’m on Team Vision. When he says that their strength leads to the challenges and that leads to catastrophe. I think they should’ve listened to him, because he ends up being right.

Q: Who was your favorite character overall in the film and why?

My favorite character in the movie was the Black Panther. I was dying to see this guy on screen ever since I heard about him. He was so quick, strong, and can beat up super soldiers.

Q: Where does this rank in the MCU out of the 13 films?

This movie ranks number 2 behind Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Q: Which MCU Phase 3 film are you most excited for, and why?

I am most excited to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I want to see some battles against one of Thanos’ followers, and more of the NOVA Corps.

There you have it. Captain America: Civil War may in fact be the pinnacle of the MCU. The film currently ranks in the 90s in both critics and audience polls on Rotten Tomatoes, and has currently grossed over $300 million, showing few signs of slowing down. Brandon and I went for the third time to a 7:30 evening show on a Thursday and the theater was mostly packed, and that wasn’t at an IMAX or 3D show. While he has it ranked second behind Cap 2, I think the third time was the charm and it’s officially my favorite MCU film. Brandon and I are planning a massive rewatch of all 13 MCU films in order, and then doing a mass re-ranking, so stay tuned.

Captain America: Civil War is in theaters now.
