Edge of Tomorrow starring Emily Blunt

Earlier this year Disney released a schedule of yet-to-be-announced film. Given the string of successful live-action adaptations and reboots the studio has gone through recently, it’s no surprise that they would be announcing release dates early on. One of those live-action films Disney has in store for us is the sequel to the 1964 film Mary Poppins.

Now the studio has announced an official title, Mary Poppins Returns, and a release date for the film. The film, which will star Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, is expected to hit theaters in December 2018. More on the story below.

In a press release, Disney confirmed that the film will open in theaters on December 25, 2018. Blunt was reported to be in talks for the title role in February of this year. The actress has previously starred in Sicario, Looper, and Edge of Tomorrow. She will be joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical genius behind Hamilton. He will play a new character called Jack, a street lamplighter.

The film will draw inspiration from a “wealth of material in P.L. Travers‘ seven additional novels.” Set in the Depression-era London (when the books were originally written), the sequel follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Written by Oscar nominee David Magee, Mary Poppins Returns will be directed by Rob Marshall, who has previously directed Blunt in Disney’s adaptation of the Broadway musical hit Into The Woods. Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman will compose an all-new score and Shaiman and Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman will write original songs.

Marshall said:

“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”

The original Mary Poppins was released back in 1964 and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The film ended up winning five Academy Awards. Mary Poppins Returns‘ release date is also family friendly and a date that is normally reserved for Oscar films, so it seems that Disney is eyeing both a major box office win and adding more awards to their mantle.

We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on new casting news should they be announced.
