Ben Affleck Says Batman Solo Movie Will Be An “Original Story” That “Borrows” From Comics

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

In the past few months since the release of the underwhelming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Brothers has done some course correction to fix the DCEU. Most recently the studio put Geoff Johns and Jon Berg in charge of the DCEU. The studio is making these moves due to Dawn of Justice performing below commercial and critical expectations. And despite letting go of Seth Grahame-Smith as director of The Flash, they will be sticking with James Wan as director of Aquaman and Ben Affleck as the writer and (maybe) director of his solo Batman feature.

We’ve been hearing some rumblings that the film could feature a large number of villains from Batman’s rogue gallery, but nothing concrete has surfaced. Mostly because Affleck is busy starring in Justice League, and you can be sure he will jump right into his solo Batman feature as soon as he is done. Now we are getting a better idea of what kind of story we can see from Batman’s first solo outing in the DCEU. According to Affleck, he wants to have an “original story” that borrows and steals “great things” from the comics. More on the story below.

Uproxx (via Blastr) discovered a video of Affleck talking to a group of Argentinian journalists about the solo Batman film. He credits his Justice League director Zack Snyder for his approach to the upcoming film. Here’s what he said:

“I would probably do in some ways what Zack did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it. Because I wouldn’t want the fans to already know the story and be familiar with it, but I would borrow, and steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.”

Now this is a little scratchy given that it has been translated, but it sounds an awful like Affleck will be directing the film. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but the way the aforementioned quote reads it sure does sound like it.

Comic book film adaptations have always had two options: pull directly from the panels of the comic or create an original story. While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice pulls from Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” there are some creative liberties as it infuses other story arcs like “The Death of Superman” and infuses some other original storylines.

There’s no word yet on when Warner Bros. will release the solo Batman film, but there are two possible dates, October 5, 2018, and November 1, 2019.
