Geek Peek: First Look At Shadow, Wednesday, and Mad Sweeney In ‘American Gods’ (Images)

A pair of images have been released giving us our first official look at American Gods, the Starz TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel of the same name.
To be more specific, the first image offer a peek the main character Shadow Moon (played by The 100 star Ricky Whittle) in the middle of a scrap with Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) at Jack’s Crocodile Bar to prove his worth to Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). The second image is a closer look at McShane’s Wednesday.
The two images and thoughts from the showrunners can be found below.
American Gods is being co-piloted by showrunners Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Star Trek) and Michael Green (Heroes, Kings). Of this first shot at Jack’s Crocodile Bar, a location from early on in Gaiman’s tale, Fuller said:
If you were (for some reason) worried about McShane as Wednesday, never fear. According to Fuller:
“I think the comedy and charm and ease of Wednesday’s appeal is very well-suited for Ian McShane. He has a vibrancy as Wednesday that could have gone so many different ways in other actors’ hands, but has such a specificity and reality, despite the situation at hand.”
Of Shadow, Green said:
“There’s where Ricky has been such a boon. His experience of [the world of the gods] is very genuine and grounded, and we want to watch him be introduced to and beaten up by this new reality.”
Finally, of the world Gaiman created, Fuller said:
“Neil created this wonderfully stuffed toy box filled with all sorts of cultural points of view on how America operates as a system, and that was so fascinating and mythological in and of itself.”
With Green adding:
“It’s really much more of an immigration story than it is a god story. One of the biggest challenges was stripping the idea of gods as X-Men or giant empowered creatures who stomp on cities and throw the oceans. We wanted them to be people with problems. It’s not about lightning bolts – it’s about the question of day-to-day survival.”
