Trolls trailer

20th Century Fox has released the first full-length trailer for the upcoming animated comedy Trolls, featuring the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. If you are a child of the ’90s, then you will more than likely recognize these colorful characters, but the film manages to add a brand new twist by bringing a musical element into the mix.

Timberlake and Kendrick are not the only singing talents. They will be joined by Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden, and Gwen Stefani. So you know you are in for a few cover songs and maybe some new ones too. Check out the full trailer below.

Now, the whole idea of a grumpy troll (voiced by Timberlake) who must be paired up with an overly bubbly troll (voiced by Kendrick) isn’t entirely original. The fact that these two polar opposite characters have to work together to stop a great evil doesn’t help either. So the only real selling point are the songs, which if you can stand cover songs being used in animated films, then this might just be your thing to watch later this year.

If you want to see this from purely an animation standpoint, then it might be for you as well. Considering how the colors pop, the design and movements of these characters, and not to mention the hair – we’ve all heard how hair can be difficult for animators – this looks like it can be entertaining.

But there comes a point where the film looks like it is having way too much fun and the positive energy seems to bleed out. It won’t be a problem for the young kids who this film is obviously geared towards, but adults might have a hard time sitting through all the cheerful and colorful singing and dancing. But again, that’s just me. Maybe the film can surprise us all by hiding a few mature jokes in there, ones that will fly over the kids’ heads and go straight for the adults’ laughing gut.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

DreamWorks Animation’s TROLLS is an irreverent comedy extravaganza with incredible music! From the genius creators of SHREK, TROLLS stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the Trolls, and her polar opposite, Branch, played by Justin Timberlake. Together, this unlikely pair of Trolls must embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the only world they’ve ever known.

Trolls arrives November 4.
