As far as filmmaking collaborations go, it doesn’t get any better than Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg. That came true in 2011 when The Adventures of Tintin was released. While the film adaptation of the Herge comic of the same name may have been a hit with some of us, it didn’t perform in the U.S. as expected. However, internationally, it was a box office hit. A sequel would have Spielberg switching places with Jackson as director and producer.
And yet, this report isn’t really about the two coming together for The Adventures of Tintin 2. Nope. During an interview, Spielberg revealed that he was working with Jackson again on a new secret project before heading off to work on a Tintin sequel. More on the story below.
With The BFG hitting theaters this weekend – check out our review here – Spielberg has gone on the press rounds to help promote the film. He recently spoke to The New Zealand Herald (via The Playlist) to talk about the film, but more importantly that secret project. Here’s what he had to say:
“Peter was so busy with “˜The Hobbit’ that it took him away from “˜Tintin’ and he’s doing another film for my company now. It’s a secret, nobody knows about it. Then after that he’ll do “˜Tintin.'”
So we know that Tintin 2 is being put on the backburner once again. It’s been almost five years since the film’s release, and delaying the production and release doesn’t do the film any favors. Still, Spielberg’s right about how The Hobbit films took Peter Jackson away from doing them. If and when the sequel does happen, it would reportedly pull from The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoner of the Sun.
The BFG director doesn’t give us any clues as to what the secret project is. Although there are some speculations as to what it could be. The Dam Busters is a long-developing WWII fighter plane project that Jackson signed up for a few years back. Based on the 1955 film of the same name, it will recreate the true story of Operation Chastise, when in 1943 the RAF’s 617 Squadron attacked the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams in Germany with Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb.
Sounds pretty exciting. But if that doesn’t happen, a project that Peter Jackson could be working on would be much smaller in scale, one that is more like Heavenly Creatures. It should be interesting to see what kind of film the two will be working on when the announcement is made. But all we can do now is just speculate.
