Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is feeling the power of God pour out of him. He is using his gift to help those in Annville, mending fences and giving sage advice. After all, if he can make a convert out of Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley), then what can’t he do. Except, it’s not the power of God inside him. We find that out when the two cowboys from Heaven, Fiore (Tom Brooke), and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) reveal it to him after an entire day of dishing out good healing words to townsfolk. We get a taste for what it truly is when Quincannon hosts a meeting with rival company execs and after some proper etiquette and drinks, serves them a death sentence via large semi automatic weapon. In other character news, a strange relationship is brewing between Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Tulip (Ruth Negga).
Spoilers below if you have not seen this week’s Preacher:
“What’s inside you isn’t God… it’s a mistake.” When they don’t give Jesse the answers, he compels the truth. What’s inside him… Genesis. At the dawn of creation an angel and demon fell in love, and their offspring, something that never meant to exist, is Genesis.
Preacher – “So you’re saying this Genesis is some sorta angel/demon baby?”
DeBlanc – “If by “˜baby’ you mean the most powerful entity ever known; the singular force that shift the balance of power and threaten all of creation… then yeah, it’s a baby.”
When the news is confirmed by a strange blonde woman trying to kill them, Jesse is a lot more willing to head off with them back to the Sundowner Motel. The blonde (Juliana Potter) is a seraphim, a higher order angel and the motel quickly devolves into a bloodbath of epic proportions. You see angels on Earth regenerate after death, so the room begins to fill with the corpses of the angels engaged in a brutal struggle… if you wonder why Preacher is my favorite new show of 2016, then just watch the first ten minutes of this episode. Legend (wait for it) dary!
The goal is to restrain her to find out what she knows, a point which becomes moot when Cassidy walks in mid-struggle and shoots her in the head. Of course she’s right back and now Cassidy joins the fun. “You know what this reminds me of?” he asks with a smile on his face. “Shut up Cassidy!”
Just when you get pulled into the batsh*t craziness of the show, it changes gears and focuses on character interaction. Tulip and Emily (Lucy Griffiths) have an intense kitchen confrontation, while Cassidy and Jesse shoot the breeze in their underwear, discussing their respective tattoos as well as the Genesis situation. The writing is so good on this show. I’m totally cool listening to these characters talk about anything, even after a nearly 15-minute gore fest in the motel. Jesse is convinced that despite all warning to the contrary, he will keep Genesis because “God doesn’t make mistakes.” Cassidy’s retort, “God may not make mistakes, but people are bloody famous for it.” One of those people mistakes – Jesse installing a huge bullhorn onto the church.
There’s a whole lot of crises of conscience as Jesse readies to open church. The Mayor (Ricky Mabe) survived Quincannon’s massacre, and now has to choose whether or not to cover it up. Eugene aka Arseface (Ian Colletti) knows Preacher used Genesis to make the town forgive him, and despite being treated nicely for the first time in forever, he’s not sure Jesse is going about things the right way. “You can’t make people see the light Preacher… they should choose, that’s the point,” he says. He presses too much, and we see perhaps the demon side of Genesis come out in Jesse as he finally yells, “GO TO HELL EUGENE!” and… well whoops.
We finally know what is inside of Jesse Custer, and for the first time we see the effects it’s having. Last week, everything was peachy keen and fine as Jesse doled out “God’s will.” This week, after deciding to keep Genesis to himself, he’s realizing the age old axiom: absolute power corrupts absolutely. Poor Arseface. It’s going to be very interesting to see which way Jesse goes from here in the next batch of episodes. His path to redemption has hit a snag, and he now appears to be towing the line between good and evil again. He needs a conscience, and it’ll be fun watching Cassidy, Tulip, and the angels try to play the role for him. No matter what happens, this was yet another great episode.
Preacher returns next Sunday night at 9:00pm ET on AMC.
