After the discovery of Jake’s body, the Lakewood 6… make that 5, along with the rest of the students, were put on lockdown inside Lakewood High. Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) was freaked out because he had a gun concealed in his locker. He gets himself out of the situation by doing the least boyfriendy thing ever, by telling the cops Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) has Jake’s phone on her. Suffice to say, there is tension in their relationship. Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) meanwhile, was convinced that Stavo (Santiago Segura) is the killer, ya know… since he enjoys drawing the Lakewood 6 in gruesome death mosaics on his tablet. She is scrambling since she is the one who has been in communication with the actual killer, a fact Noah (John Karna) picked up on. He “borrowed” her phone and discovered the surveillance video of her with Jake’s body. Was she Piper’s accomplice? Is she the killer? What does this mean for Bi-Curious and the Virgin???
Noah figures out a way to possibly clear Audrey’s name. He asks Eddie Krueger (wink wink) who claimed to see Piper meet with her accomplice at the hotel. Problem is… unbeknownst to them, poor Eddie was brutally corkscrewed and his body is lying in a hotel bathtub. The killer texts back for Noah to meet up later… in the funhouse… oh come on Noah! You love horror movies, no normal human being EVER meets in a funhouse!
Stavo does some undercover snooping for Brooke (Carlson Young), and discovers that Seth Branson (Bobby Campo), Brooke’s former teacher and lover has an alibi for when Jake was murdered, and it’s with Ms. Lang, who curiously locked Emma alone in an office right before the killer showed up. Well, that seems a bit too obvious. Horror movies, or series in this case, almost never revert to Occam’s razor. In fact, usually the most obvious murder suspects end up getting killed off. I need to also mention that while I like the budding Stavo/Brooke union, her boyfriend’s corpse just landed next to her and it seems a tad early for flirting.
Brooke decides to play Ms. Lang (Austin Highsmith) against Branson, by lying about sleeping with him to her, and calling him for a hook up. Noah defies all logic and goes to the funhouse before coming to his senses, but of course the killer is in his car and knocks him out with chloroform. That scene got me really annoyed because it was so out of character for Noah to do that, and they kind of saved it. Interestingly, that scene was very similar to Randy’s death scene in Scream 2, and it’s quite obvious that Randy (Jamie Kennedy) was the inspiration for Noah. Brooke shows up for her “date” with Branson. After some playful role play involving handcuffs, she holds him hostage with a pair of scissors until he caves about his real alibi. His confession: Jake was paying him to leave town with money from her dad.
My favorite scene to no one’s surprise, if you’ve read my reviews of this show, is Noah and Audrey “deathbed confessions.” Emma is overheard outside, and Audrey suddenly springs up free from captivity. She kidnapped Noah and faked herself being kidnapped to get him to stop being suspicious of her. Clever, I did NOT see that coming. Emma, of course, sees the killer again without anyone to corroborate the story, and soon Kieran pops in because why not, and the Lakewood 6 survivors hightail it out of there. Audrey goes to Noah to give her full confession about Piper and whoops, the audio was running on his podcast.
The best thing I can say about this season of Scream so far is I have no clue who the killer is. Last season, I called Piper literally the second she appeared on screen. Here I am lost, but in a good way. There’s some backstory involving the adults, that probably goes back to Brandon James and will likely be fleshed out. There’s Emma’s PTSD story, and they’ve done a great job of making the killer only visible to her so far. The Noah/Audrey story is always compelling, and Brooke has a lot more depth to her character than I ever anticipated. She had “sex-scene death” written all over her in season 1. That leads to my constant issue… not enough death. Not to keep beating the dead horse, but horror sequels are bloodier than the originals, and season 2 of Scream has netted 2(!) deaths in 6 episodes, and only one was a semi-important character. Conversely, they’ve done a really good job at building these characters up, so that when (if) some of the main characters die, it’ll have a much bigger impact on the audience.
All in all, another solid hour. MTV’s Scream returns next Tuesday night at 10:00pm ET. Next week’s horror movie-themed title: “Let the Right One In.”
