Walker Stalker Con: A Word With Bates Motel’s Max Thieriot
  |  @   |

This weekend kicked off another fan convention, Walker Stalker Con, in Edison, NJ. As with last week’s Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, this had a main show focus (The Walking Dead – last week was Arrow, with a few others sprinkled in). At this one, my main sprinkle was Max Thieriot, who plays Dylan Massett on Bates Motel.

Spoilers (!) if you are not caught up on Bates Motel, which at this point means go immediately and watch all 4 seasons without eating, drinking, or sleeping, and then return to read this.

There as a fan (birthday gift from the hubby), I did get a chance to speak to Thieriot for a few minutes, first gushing about the bananas 4th season ending, then admitting that I thought he was going to die pretty much every single episode. “So did I,” he admitted. But Dylan survived so far, and it’s going to be completely tragic when he finds out that Norma (Vera Farmiga) is dead, given their complicated relationship, and his reluctant need for her love. Just when is Romero (Nestor Carbonell) going to fill him in?

He gave my husband and I some tiny bits about what’s in store for next season, confirming what Carlton Cuse said recently that we will definitely be seeing Marion Crane by the end. I told him about interviewing his TV dad, Kenny Johnson at the end of season 3, both agreeing what a great guy he is, and “maybe we would see him next season.” I certainly hope so.

He gets his shot at directing next season in episode 4, being super humble about it too. I wouldn’t worry, Max. Watching the ton of TV that I do, shows directed by the actors that star in them have a tendency to be even better than the others. My theory is that the actors bring an inner perspective that a director can’t. Actors know what the directed movements feel like from the inside. One of my favorites last season was episode 7’s “There’s No Place Like Home,” directed by Carbonell.

My last question came out like, “Are you gonna die next season? No, don’t tell me. But, are you?”

His answer?

“I don’t know if I’m going to die.”

I stared him down trying to discern the truth. But… actors. I couldn’t, so I will remain hopeful that Dylemma will survive Psycho.

I didn’t get to ask him how to pronounce his last name, but I definitely heard about 7 versions from various fans and staff throughout the day.

And girls… he is as sweet, and kind, and laid back, and dreamy as Dylan, minus the drug dealing and penchant for ending up in violent situations. Sigh…

Bates Motel returns in 2017 on A&E.
