Starz has revealed the first look at the character Bilquis from their upcoming series American Gods, based on the bestselling novel by Neil Gaiman.
Check out the photo here below of Bilquis, played by Yetide Badaki, in what is sure to be an unforgettable scene in the television show.
Co-showrunner Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) had said that the character, who is one of the “Old Gods” who had very few pages devoted to her in the book, would be getting an expanded role in the TV series and would be “a major player in this world.”
That sounds pretty good to me!
Fans of Gaiman’s novel will recall that a mere 25 pages in or so, Bilquis, a goddess of love also known in some parts as the Queen of Sheba, is introduced and makes a major impression. This is one sequence I wondered how the show would make happen without looking silly and fake. Fuller (who will head up with series with Michael Green) also previously noted in that they planned to shoot the sequence “exactly as written,” which should be very interesting to see.
Below are more details about the sequence from Fuller revealed during a 2014 interview with Den Of Geek, so if you haven’t read the book, I suggest you skip the excerpted text below and be surprised when you see the TV show, because it’s a total SPOILER.
Casting is still underway for American Gods, which will premiere on Starz in 2017, but so far we know that Ricky Whittle is the central character Shadow Moon, with Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon (Shadow’s wife), Gillian Anderson as Media, Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, and Dane Cook as Shadow’s friend Robbie. Other cast members include Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Jonathan Tucker, Pablo Schreiber, Peter Stormare, Chris Obi, Mousa Kraish, Omid Abtahi, and Demore Barnes.
SPOILERS
One of the most amazing sequences for me when I was reading it was the Goddess Bilquis eating a man with her vagina! I think it’s beautifully written in the novel. What I love about how Neil’s laid out that sequence is that you’re in the gentleman caller’s point of view for his climax and the reeling of that. I mean, what is it like to cinematically deliver an orgasm to an audience that”¦ more than likely, is not experiencing an orgasm at that moment, although you never know! Being in his point of view in the novel, he comes out of his orgasmic revelry and then he realises that he’s kind of hanging upside down, chest-deep from her. We plan to deliver that moment as it is written, because I believe that we can, and that’s very exciting for us because we were breaking that story and thinking, we are just going to lift that right out of the book and drop it right into the show. That came up in the Starz meeting, they were like, “˜how are you going to do that moment?’ and we said, “˜we’re going to do it exactly as written’.
