In March, it was announced that Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television were developing a pilot for a live-action series based on Ben Edlund‘s superhero spoof comic book The Tick, with Edlund scripting and serving as an executive producer and British comedic genius Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) cast in the title role. The pilot was directed by Wally Pfister, the cinematographer on all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, Inception, and Moneyball.
Recently Amazon released both the premiere date for the pilot and a small set of images, including our first look at Serafinowicz is full Tick attire. You can check out the pictures here below.
Here is Serafinowicz decked out in his Tick costume. Unlike the character’s last live-action incarnation, the costume this time around will cover the top half of his face (leaving convenient eye holes, naturally).
The final new image reveals that none other than Oscar-winning comedian, actress, and current co-host of The ViewWhoopi Goldberg has a role in this new iteration of The Tick, possibly playing herself as an interviewer of superheroes.
Here’s Amazon’s official plot synopsis:
In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Griffin Newman (Vinyl), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion). The Tick is executive produced by Ben Edlund (Supernatural), Barry Josephson (Bones) and Barry Sonnenfeld (A Series of Unfortunate Events), directed by Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight), and written by Edlund. The Tick is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.
Edlund, who has also worked as a producer on fan-favorite televisions series such as Supernatural and Firefly, created the Tick while in high school and first debuted the character as the mascot for Boston’s New England Comics store chain in 1986 before giving him his own independent comic book two years later.
During the 1990s, the Tick starred in two series on the Fox Network: the first was a cartoon that aired for three seasons on Saturday mornings beginning in 1994, while the second was a live-action show with Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, Family Guy) in the title role and ran for nine episodes in late 2001. Warburton is serving as an executive producer on the Amazon pilot.
Amazon will premiere The Tick on its Instant Video streaming service as part of its Fall comedy pilot season on August 19, 2016. SPOON!
Interesting. The Tick was always a big muscular guy, which worked well when Warburton donned the costume. I trust Edlund, Warburton is on board, and they have a great actor, so fingers crossed.

Warburton was perfect for the role, both physically and in his delivery. Warburon *is* The Tick. I get that maybe he’s past that in his career but a little guy in a rubber muscle suit is going to be a tough sell.
