CONAN SDCC 2016 Melissa Benoist, Conan O'Brien, Grant Gustin, Stephen Amell

As he has done in the past Conan O’Brien temporarily moved his show Conan down to San Diego for the famed San Diego Comic Con going on right now. Last year, Conan had shows dedicated to many of the superhero films of 2016, including Batman v Superman, X-Men: Apocalypse, and so on.

On Thursday night’s show from SDCC, before bringing his guests out, Conan visited Ironhead Studios, responsible for making the costumes of some of the most famous modern superheroes, including those in Batman v Superman. Conan gets to try on a Hawkman helmet, and fantasize about Wonder Woman Gal Gadot while standing with her headless body replica. He gets creative, placing casts of Ian McKellen and Matt Damon’s heads on the Wonder Woman statue. Conan then volunteers to have his own superhero suit made, meaning the self deprecating comedian had to first pose and be subjected to a full body scan. He then debuts the new Conan supersuit, a buffed out blue bodysuit featuring a C-belt and bright orange hair helmet”¦ it’s fantastic.

After a guest appearance from Ash vs Evil Dead‘s Bruce Campbell, complete with chainsaw arm, and “Captain Make America Great Again,” Conan welcomed Nick Kroll (The League, Kroll Show) being carried in by a group of Hot Dogs, while eating a hot dog to celebrate his new animated film Sausage Party. We get to see an exclusive clip of the film, featuring Kroll’s character”¦ a douche yelling at a hot dog and a bun, voiced by Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig respectively.

Next up was the main event as Conan welcomed three of the leads for the new CW superhero lineup, Arrow, Flash and Supergirl themselves, Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin, and Melissa Benoist. Conan started by discussing the difficulties in wearing the superhero suits, as he proved earlier, and shows off his sweat stains. Amell says there are two seasons to wearing the superhero suit: one is the hot, sweaty one, the other is freezing cold, especially since Arrow films in the Pacific Northwest (Vancouver, Canada). After showing a picture of Amell’s physique, Grant Gustin joked that he purposely wouldn’t wear a t-shirt next to Amell.

Discussing the superpowers of each hero, Conan joked that The Flash runs around a lot and then stop and gets beaten on, while Arrow is “Passive Aggressive Man” whose power is his stubbornness. Benoist easily has the best powers of anyone up there. He brings up Benoist and Gustin’s joint past on Glee and Conan brings up the phenomenal possibility of superhero musicals! YES! Do it! Buffy did one, Scrubs did one. Musical episodes are great! “Is it in the realm of possibility that you and Flash get together and sing Oklahoma?” Conan asked to a rouse of applause and laughter.

They all practiced their superhero “smolder,” aka their intense stares into the camera and the winner easily”¦ was Andy Richter.

The Flash returns on Tuesday October 4th, Arrow premieres on Wednesday, October 5th, and Supergirl makes it debut on The CW on Monday, October 10th. Look forward to their 4-show crossover with DC’s Legends of the Tomorrow.

Conan ended Thursday night’s show with Weird Al Yankovic playing the parody of Lorde’s “Royals” called “Foil” from his latest album Mandatory Fun. Conan is on TBS every weeknight at 11:00.
