SDCC 2016: Scream Factory Reveals 13 New Blu-ray Releases
  |

For many years Shout! Factory has been an important presence at the San Diego Comic-Con, using their panels and booths to promote current and upcoming releases on DVD and Blu-ray. When the company launched their horror/sci-fi imprint Scream Factory in 2012, their pilgrimage to the Con to announce future releases became one of the hottest events around for film geeks and home video consumers.

Scream has been responsible for some of the finest Blu-ray editions of the greatest genre features ever made, and last night they announced that soon they will add 13 titles to their ever-expanding library.

Among of these releases will be the second and third in the Poltergeist series, two films from prolific Canadian auteur David Cronenberg, a double feature pairing of two Slumber Party Massacre sequels, and most impressively, the first U.S. Blu-ray edition of Don Coscarelli‘s outrageous cult classic Bubba Ho-Tep – starring Bruce Campbell as an aging Elvis Presley and the late Ossie Davis as a man convinced he is John F. Kennedy who team up to battle a soul-sucking mummy in a Texas nursing home.

Although they have no concrete release dates as of yet, many of these titles will be receiving the Collector’s Edition treatment, meaning we can expect them to be equipped with loads of new and archival bonus features including commentaries, documentaries, interviews, deleted scenes, marketing materials, and much more.

See below for the full list, along with my own commentary.

  • Bubba Ho-Tep – Already mentioned. This will be a Collector’s Edition title. Anchor Bay put out a great Region B Blu-ray a few years back.
  • Willard – The original killer rat revenge flick, remade in 2003 with Crispin Glover. Due to complicated rights issues, this film has not been released on home video since the glory days of VHS.
  • Ben – The 1972 sequel to Willard, released less than a year after the original and featuring a theme song sung by young Michael Jackson.
  • Black Christmas – Suspenseful Canadian chiller directed by Bob Clark and starring Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder, this was one of the earliest slasher flicks and a huge influence on John Carpenter’s blockbuster horror classic Halloween.
  • Poltergeist II: The Other Side – The one featuring the creepy preacher Kane and a monster designed by H.R. Giger.
  • Poltergeist III – I remember seeing this almost every day on HBO when I was 10. Perhaps Scream’s collector’s edition will feature the original ending filmed before the actress who played Carol Anne unexpectedly died.
  • Dreamscape – A forerunner to Inception starring Dennis Quaid, Kate Capshaw, and Max Von Sydow. Image Entertainment’s 2010 Blu-ray release was criticized for its lackluster HD transfer of what was clearly not the uncut version of the film. Scream has nowhere to go but up for their edition.
  • Rabid – David Cronenberg’s second full-length horror film, starring XXX queen and Ivory Snow mascot Marilyn Chambers. Arrow Video previously released this on Region B Blu-ray.
  • Dead Ringers – Cronenberg’s mind-bending thriller starring Jermey Irons as identical twin gynecologists who work with strange surgical instruments.
  • Slumber Party Massacre II/III – Scream released all three Slumber Party Massacre movies in one DVD collection back in 2010 and the first one on Blu-ray in 2014. A long overdue release for fans of the slasher series.
  • The House That Screamed – A Spanish horror film about a series of murders taking place at a French boarding school for troubled young girls, this was released Stateside by American-International Pictures and failed to find an audience.
  • Dead of Winter – Never seen this one, but it was directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde) and starred Mary Steenburgen and the late Roddy McDowall, so it has to have a modest enough fan base to justify a Blu-ray release.

There you have it. Scream Factory – keeping horror and sci-fi fans broke and happy since 2012. Let’s hope, hope, HOPE these Blu-rays are worth the $$$.

Be sure to check out all of our coverage of this year’s SDCC.

  1. Wow, Willard and Ben on Blu Ray at last! Waited so long for these movies to come out on DVD, let alone Blu Ray! Well done, Scream Factory.

  3. DEAD OF WINTER is fantastic. If they’re using the same print as the Amazon HD version, which I bought, then this will be a stellar disc.
