Why ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ SDCC Footage Won’t Be Released

More often than not, you will find people begging to see footage from the Saturday Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con, even more so if that footage is from Marvel Studios. Though studios are vigilant when it comes to leaked footage, by the time it is out there, it has already been viewed by the world. Some studios like FOX make the decision not to show up in order to prevent any leaks from happening. But seeing as Marvel owes a bit of gratitude for their success to SDCC, they have to show up. Now they were on hand to show us a tiny bit of footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, and even make an announcement for Black Panther. But much of the audience’s excitement came from Guardians part, which showed us a bit of footage in the form of a clip and teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer will probably be released in the near future, although it may be a bit more polished and have some additional footage by that time. However, the clip of Baby Groot helping Yondu and Rocket escape from their prison cell may not appear online at all until after the actual film is released. Director James Gunn actually explained why you probably won’t see the clip any time soon. Check out the video here below.

Gunn went on Facebook live to give us the details.

For those who aren’t able to view the embed, here’s a transcription of the part in the video where he explains why he won’t be releasing the footage:

“Of course I want to share with you guys everything. It’s important for me to be able to do that. But here’s the thing: The footage we released at Comic-Con will eventually be seen by the pubic, but in a more finished form. It’s very early days. We’ve only been stopped shooting for a month. We presented an entire huge scene with Yondu, Rocket and Baby Groot, and then we also presented a special glimpse just for San Diego Comic-Con, a teaser trailer of sorts.

The visual effects are not finished. I am a perfectionist. People who have followed know that everything needs to be exactly as I want it to be to be seen in a film, so that it stands up to repeated viewings. The truth is this Comic-Con footage”¦it’s not something that I nor Marvel are comfortable with being out there and standing up to repeated viewings, because the visual effects just aren’t finished. If I do something, I want to do it 100% correctly.

However, to sit in the audience, one time, and show them an in-progress piece of film, it’s a different story. It’s just like if you were a friend of mine, you might come over to my house and I might show you a little bit of the movie. Or I might be in the editing room and show you a little piece.”

It’s hard to argue against Gunn’s reasoning for not releasing the footage. Had I not gone to SDCC this year, I would have probably been like everyone else who didn’t get to attend SDCC and asked for the footage. But for those who did attend, a lot of us who got into Hall H had to camp out the night before (yes, some bloggers have to sleep outdoors and suffer allergy attacks) just to step into the giant venue. So for all our efforts, we are treated to some very exclusive footage.

But if that footage does end up being leaked, whatever we will see is either a bunch of motion-concept art or something that is clearly a work-in-progress. So if any of that does end up being leaked, it will be subject to scrutiny and criticism. Which really isn’t fair because what they are seeing isn’t the final product.

So of course there is going to be some disappointment that some of you are not going to see the footage. Still, the fact is that when it does come out, the product as a whole will be a lot better than when I saw it at SDCC.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017.
