‘Suicide Squad’ Fallout: Jared Leto On Joker Cuts and Wanting R-Rating
  |  @   |

Normally, a film breaking a summer box office record would be a cause for celebration. Suicide Squad earned a most impressive $135 million, proving that some films are indeed critic proof (check out my review). It really didn’t need the cast, crew, or even Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins to come to its defense. And yet, even with those massive record-breaking numbers, it seems that audiences began to catch on that there are still many problems the DCEU braintrust needs to address.

Amid the reports of heavy studio interference, Suicide Squad star Jared Leto has come out to talk about how much Joker footage was left on the cutting room floor. According to him, there was enough to make a whole movie. More on this story below.

It is really hard to criticize or even judge Leto’s interpretation of Joker given that audiences get a very limited of time to get to know the character. In an interview with BBC, Leto talks about how much he shot playing the Clown Prince Of Crime, but never disparages the film,

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene that it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.”

In the same interview, he says he “always wished this film was rated R,” adding “I had actually said that when we were starting. It felt like if a film was ever going to be rated R it should be the one about the villains.”

If there really is that amount of footage that never made it into the theatrical cut – the marketing suggests that there are scenes that do exist, just check out the trailers and images – one would hope that we would see a majority of it in the extended version on home entertainment. However, Leto wasn’t sure about that,

Oh, there are a lot of [deleted] scenes, yeah, there are a lot of scenes that didn’t make it to the final film. And hopefully they’ll see the light of day “¦ who knows?

It’s not exactly pessimistic, but it isn’t optimistic either. But the film would have benefitted from more Joker and less Enchantress bellydancing to the “giant swirling circling of trash.” Even with those reports of Trailer Park (a company that cuts movie trailers) assisting in editing the film, Ayer assures everyone that the theatrical cut is his movie. Here’s what the director told Collider during the film’s press day,

We have a chunk [of deleted scenes], there’s definitely over 10 minutes of material on there. But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut. And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you fucking love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship (laughs), not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.

Suicide Squad wouldn’t be the first film whose marketing was a complete misdirect from the final theatrical cut, and it won’t be the last. But there is also word that the Joker wasn’t the only one whose scenes got left out of the final cut. We will have a bit more on this in another in another report.
