Bethesda Explains Why We’re Not Getting ‘Morrowind,’ ‘Oblivion’ Remasters

Oblivion Gate

It was revealed at E3 2016 that a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was on the way this fall.

But, while this news was exciting, many fans of The Elder Scrolls games wondered why Bethesda didn’t remaster some of the older games in the series, such as Morrowind and Oblivion, first. There is a reason for this, and Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines shared what it is.

The reason Bethesda isn’t working on remasters for the older games is pretty simple: the older the game, the more work required to remaster properly. And this effort could delay work on things fans probably want more, such as The Elder Scrolls VI.

Here’s what Hines had to say:

“An Oblivion remaster is an interesting idea, but it is a 10-year-old game, and Morrowind is 14. With Oblivion, you are talking about several engines ago. So gamers were like, ‘why didn’t you do Oblivion HD instead of Skyrim HD?’ It wasn’t like those two processes were exactly the same.

Oblivion HD would be a significantly larger undertaking to get to work and Morrowind”¦ geez”¦ that’s even worse. So the question becomes, ‘should we work on a Morrowind or Oblivion remaster, or should we work on Elder Scrolls VI?’ Because that is the volume of work we are talking about.

So we try not to spend too much time on remasters: the only other one I think we have done is Dishonored, which was a new IP that came out in the last year of a generation. So it was not a hard path to walk to bring that over to current-gen. For everything else, we have to ask ‘do we want to take time and resources, and spend money, on something that is already out to bring it to a new platform, or do we want to forge ahead with new stuff?’ And in most cases, the answer is that we want to forge ahead with new stuff.”

It’s also important to note that we don’t yet know whether or not The Elder Scrolls VI will actually be Bethesda Game Studios’ next game. And considering Fallout 4 just came out less than a year ago, it will likely be a while before we have an answer to that question.

A new Elder Scrolls is a safe bet considering they’ve been alternating between the two massively popular RPG franchises for years now. But deep down fans know it’s only a matter of time before they decide to take on something new. And with The Elder Scrolls Online coming out fairly recently, it would not be too shocking if this is the window they choose to mix things up.

Would you rather get a Morrowind and/or Oblivion remaster, The Elder Scrolls VI, or something brand new from Bethesda next?

  1. Or they could have spent time remastering Morrowind, at least, instead of wasting time on Skyrim and Dishonored 2… Just saying…

  2. That is just an excuse. An independent group is remastering KoTOR on their own time. Bethesda could do it with their older games and actually make money on them. Someone is remastering Morrowind on his own, surely Bethesda could do it easier since they have all the original code. I would happily pay money for a remastered Morrowind. I would be ecstatic over a remastared Daggerfall!
