Lethal Weapon Header

In a world of reboots, whether in television or film, one tends to feel a strange mix of excitement and skepticism. The nostalgia for the old cannot reconcile with the expected letdown of the new, because the original lives on your imaginary pedestal. FOX is trying its hand at Lethal Weapon, and from the glimpse we get from this sneak peek, I believe it is worth it to give it a chance. Why, you ask?

Check out the synopsis and sneak peek below.

The reasons:

– Damon Wayans: He is one of the funniest people in the world. Anton Jackson, Homey D. Clown, Oswald Bates… okay, I know I’m naming his In Living Color characters, but they are iconic. It looks like he will be playing the straight man more than anything, but he’s naturally funny.

– Funny police procedural: Love them. Can’t get enough of them. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of my top shows.

– The original characters: The original characterization of Murtaugh and Riggs are so skillfully fleshed out, it would be extremely difficult to not enjoy them, no matter who is playing them.

– The hair: Crawford’s hairstyle looks like the modern homage to Gibson’s mullet.

Maybe this show will be successful and maybe it won’t. Such is the roll of the viewing dice. But there is enough in the sneak peek and the other little bits we have seen, to warrant us tuning in to see if magic can be made on the small screen with this large screen gem.

Lethal Weapon premieres Wednesday, September 21st, on FOX.

Combining action and drama with friendship and humor, LETHAL WEAPON reboots the hit movie franchise, as it follows classic cop duo Riggs and Murtaugh, who are working a crime-ridden beat in modern-day Los Angeles.

Grief-stricken after the loss of his young wife and unborn child, ex-Navy SEAL-turned-detective MARTIN RIGGS (Clayne Crawford, “Rectify”) moves to California to “start over” at the LAPD. He’s paired up with ROGER MURTAUGH (Emmy Award nominee Damon Wayans, Sr., “My Wife and Kids,” “In Living Color”), who’s just coming back to the job after a near-fatal heart attack. Riggs’ penchant for diving headfirst into the line of fire immediately clashes with Murtaugh’s prudent, by-the-book technique. It’s clear from the moment they meet, this partnership could be lethal. But during their first case together, Riggs drags Murtaugh on a high-speed chase culminating inside the Long Beach Grand Prix and into a seaport shootout with drug dealers – and despite his protests, the older cop feels more alive than he has in years. Meanwhile, Riggs gets a glimpse of why Murtaugh is so determined to get home safely at the end of each day – he’s got a family and a newborn baby of his own. By the time their investigation ends, Riggs realizes he may have found something worth living for – a partner and friend like Murtaugh. And even Murtaugh figures this arrangement might just work out after all. If only Riggs doesn’t get them killed first…
