Last week we saw glimmers of hope, and then crashed back to reality. Elliot (Rami Malek) got a visit from Angela (Portia Doubleday), and seemed to be getting better. He was less paranoid, and more accepting of Mr. Robot (Christian Slater). The plan was to get Angela to take an fsociety logic bomb, and hack into the FBI. Elliot also discovered what Ray (Craig Robinson) was up to, and it’s not pretty. He uncovered a secret website which caters to the dark and depraved, and when Ray found out, Elliot was dragged out of bed by goons in the middle of the night. Meanwhile the FBI was in China trying to make connections between The Dark Army and the hack that halted the US economy. That didn’t go too well for Agent DiPierro (Grace Gummer), when a group of masked men stormed the FBI and shot and killed a number of them. If The Dark Army was willing to kill federal agents, I have to imagine killing fsociety hackers isn’t too big a deal for them.

Spoilers for this week’s Mr. Robot below.

The opening 15-minutes of the episode, are like something out of Supernatural’s “Changing Channels.” Elliot wakes up in in a car on an old USA network “Word Up Wednesday” show. The whole family is there, there’s a laugh track, Alf, and 80s-style commercials… it’s glorious, and it’s all in Elliot’s head. He awakes in a grimy bed beaten to a pulp by Ray’s goons, and Alf is on TV.

After the China attack, the FBI is on high alert which will make things especially hard on Angela, who is charged with delivering the logic bomb. This means Darlene (Carly Chaikin) and the rest of fsociety have to teach her to hack in one day. Meanwhile The Dark Army is has no time for questions and punishes Cisco (Michael Drayer). DiPierro is told to go on psych-leave, but she refuses. They are trying to play the attack in China as a group of rogues, but she’s put two and two together about The Dark Army.

It’s time for the hack and it’s an incredible scene, a long nonstop cut of Angela manuevering through E-Corp with Darlene in her ear, while fighting off advances from horny FBI agents. Just when she thinks she’s in the clear, the wi-fi goes down and she needs to head to her cublicle receiving instructions from Darlene the whole time. As she’s about to finish up, Agent DiPierro shows up. This is a crazy tense couple minutes. The tension of Angela’s trip down the fsociety rabbithole is interupted, as we head back to Elliot being dragged out of bed. He is shaking and afraid and Mr. Robot is there. Except it isn’t Mr. Robot. For a brief moment, it’s just his dad, there to protect him. Mr. Robot is running the gamut on emotions tonight.

This was a totally different Mr. Robot than we are used to seeing. The opening 15-minutes showed that Sam Esmail has a fun side to him, and it was an absolute blast to watch. Once we settled back to reality, the tension picked up with Angela’s attempted hacking and the incredible long take used. And then the final few moments left me genuinely in tears. There is absolutely nothing this show, its creator, and its cast cannot do. Purely and simply, this is television’s best show.

Mr. Robot returns next Wednesday at 10:00 on USA.
