‘Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda Joins Alan Menken For Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’
  |  @   |

It’s been one heck of a year for Lin-Manuel Miranda. After he took his last bow as the title character in the hit Broadway show Hamilton this summer, he’s been keeping himself busy working on the music for Disney’s upcoming Moana and signing on opposite Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns.

But it appears that his Disney tenure isn’t quite done yet. Now Miranda will be stepping in as a producer and to work on the music for the not-so-surprising live-action take on Disney’s 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid. More on the story below.

Deadline says that Miranda will be working with Alan Menken, who also worked on the original and earned two Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea.” Like the live-action take of Beauty and the Beast that will be hitting theaters early next year, the film will feature original songs plus new ones. Details are still light, but producing and writing music won’t be his only job. According to the report, Miranda will also be acting as a story supervisor but will not write the script. A screenwriter is expected to be announced soon.

If anything, adding yet another live-action telling of a Disney animated classic to the film slate shows how much confidence the studio has in these projects. Cinderella and The Jungle Book were critical and commercial hits, and while Pete’s Dragon didn’t meet box office expectations in its theatrical debut, it did manage to be a nice reinvention of the 1977 film of the same name. Alice Through The Looking Glass was the other live-action release that Disney had, but that failed to win over at the box office and has been deemed a flop. Still, we can look forward to the aforementioned Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins Returns. Not to mention the many other projects that are currently under development which include Cruella with Emma Stone; Ava Duverney’s adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time; The Dwayne Johnson starring vehicle Jungle Cruise; a live-action telling of Dumbo from director Tim Burton; Maleficent 2 starring Angelina Jolie, Winnie the Pooh from Listen Up Philip director Alex Ross Perry; Tinkerbell written by Finding Dory screenwriter Victoria Strouse, Mulan, The Sword In The Stone from Game of Thrones writer/producer Brian Cogman, an Aladdin prequel called Genie, a film about Prince Charming, Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a film about Snow White’s sister Rose Red, and The Jungle Book 2.

But this wouldn’t be the only Little Mermaid project currently under development. Last year, Sofia Coppola exited Universal and Working Title’s adaptation of the film. Since then Rebecca Thomas has climbed aboard as director, and Chloe Grace Moretz will star.

No word yet on when Disney would like to release the film, although Disney’s live-action remake schedule does have a few untitled films already dated.
