Robert Kirkman Announces End To Comic Series ‘Invincible’

Invincible Comic Ending Cover

The end is near for Invincible.

In 2003, Robert Kirkman introduced the world to The Walking Dead — the comic book that would go on to spawn the television ratings giant of the same name. But the same year, Kirkman, along with Cory Walker and later Ryan Ottley, also released Invincible at Image Comics — a comic that sports the tagline “The Best Superhero Comic In The Universe.” And let me tell you, this is not far from the truth.

Now Kirkman has announced that the long-running comic will be ending. See when that will be below.

Invincible never quite had the same critical success as its contemporary, but it should have. The story follows Mark Grayson — son of the ever powerful Omni-Man — and his path to not only becoming the greatest superhero, but simply figuring out his place in the universe. This isn’t your typical superhero story, though. As Kirkman explains in some excerpts from his announcement letter to fans, he wanted to:

“…play with the tropes of the genre, but twist them into something new, at all times, no matter what…

That is why villains sometimes win, and heroes give up… and eventually stop being heroes altogether… and change happens, and sticks, and characters die, and never come back… no matter how popular they are…”

And Kirkman has remained on this path throughout the books’ run thus far.

Now, 13 years after its debut, and with 129 issues released, Kirkman knows what lies ahead. In the announcement, he explains that the series will come to a close with issue 144. In just over a year, fans will have to say goodbye to Mark Grayson and the world of Invincible.

While I am disappointed by the news, I am also glad that Kirkman has an ending in sight. Drawing the story out too long could force the book to become stale, so better he end it sooner rather than later. And I can only imagine that the finale will stay true to Kirkman’s dream for the story as a whole: giving its champion a fitting conclusion unlike anything we’ve seen before.

If interested, you can read Kirkman’s full announcement over at Skybound.
