‘Thor’ Star Natalie Portman Says As Far As She Knows She’s “Done” With Marvel

The character of Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, in the Thor films has stayed true to the spirit of the character in the comics. For one thing, she helped give an understanding of how things work on Earth as opposed to Asgard. The character also acted as a love interest which stretched for two films.
But now it seems Marvel isn’t using the character anymore. She is officially out of Thor: Ragnarok, and it sounds an awful lot like she won’t be seen again anytime soon. According to Portman, she believes that she is done. More on the story below.
The Wall Street Journal spoke to Portman about her absence in Ragnarok and if she will return for Avengers: Infinity War or the other untitled Avengers film. Here’s what she told them:
“As far as I know, I’m done. I mean, I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, I have no idea. But as far as I know, I’m done. It was a great thing to be a part of.”
It’s not as though Portman is missing out. While she did play opposite Hemsworth in Thor and Thor: The Dark World, she hasn’t had a cameo in any of the other films and being mentioned only by name in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Because of that, her absence probably won’t be as impactful, and let’s also remember that the relationship between the two has been on and off with a few other ladies pining for the Asgardian God of Thunder. Plus the new love interest in Thor: Ragnarok will be played by Tessa Thompson.
But finding a place for Portman’s character to fit in a cosmic journey buddy film would have been difficult given that she would have probably been the only human with no superpowers. In addition, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said Portman would not appear in Thor: Ragnarok, and that the majority of the movie would take place in the cosmos. It has me wondering what is Earth’s place in Ragnarok.
However, Portman does leave the door slightly open for a possible return. It was never clear how many films she was contractual obligated for or if she has any interest in exploring her character again, but it would be nice to see her character have some closure in the MCU. And Portman seems to be sincere about wanting to visit the MCU again. But on the off-chance that she doesn’t return for a major role, we can at least hope that she does get that closure.
She will not be missed. Portman was easily the worst part of both Thor movies. I liked her in a number of other films, but she was terrible in the Thor franchise.
