‘Manchester By The Sea’ Trailer: Casey Affleck Comes To Grips With Emotional Family Drama
  |  @   |

More and more smaller films are finding distribution on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Studios. The latter was able to snatch up one of the year’s most anticipated films to come out of the Sundance Film Festival this year.

Kenneth Lonergan‘s Manchester by the Sea stars Casey Affleck as the sudden legal guardian of his nephew (Lucas Hedges). Things get much more complicated when he makes the decision to come back home where the community he left behind and separated wife live. An official trailer for the movie has been released and can be seen below.

There has been a lot of praise for this small drama since it made its debut in January at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and judging by the looks of the trailer, it is easy to see why it has received such praise. It looks and feels very human, and doesn’t gloss over the drama with any hyperbole. There are a few laughs, but they are more to give the film some levity. The real focus of this is to point out how grief can hit hard, and how people deal with that grief in a very down-to-earth way that doesn’t feel scripted.

The film also stars Michelle Williams and Kyle Chandler.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In Manchester by the Sea, the latest film from award-winning writer and director Kenneth Lonergan, the life of a solitary Boston janitor is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. The story of the Chandlers, a working-class family living in a Massachusetts fishing village for generations, Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope.

After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 15-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

In his first film since 2011’s acclaimed Margaret, Lonergan once again proves himself a powerful and visionary storyteller as he seamlessly weaves past and present together, crafting a tension-filled tale that deftly eschews sentimentality in favor of penetrating emotional insight and deeply affecting human relationships.

Manchester by the Sea is set to open on November 18, 2016.
