If you’ve seen the new animated film, Batman: The Killing Joke, you know that somehow, someway, despite all the fan rage against the DCEU films, they actually managed to mess up the un-mess-up-able. Alan Moore wrote Batman: The Killing Joke in 1988, and it instantly became the most talked about and adored comics maybe of all time. It is the quintessential Batman & Joker story, featuring the Joker committing awful acts in an effort to prove to Batman that all it takes is one really bad day to make a good man go crazy. These include shooting and paralyzing Barbara Gordon, as well as the extended torture of her father. DC animated movies have long been the standard in comic animation, so when critics and fans both slammed this adaptation, it became an easy target for the gang at Screen Junkies to give it the Honest Trailers treatment.
Check out the Honest Trailer below.
The obvious target of geek-rage and critical backlash is the opening 35-40 minutes… which as narrator Jon Bailey points out, has LITERALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE KILLING JOKE! “The joke is on us is in the wanna be edgy misfire.” Watch the best Joker story ever… and sit through plenty of added on non-Joker characters like… (and no I’m not making this up), Paris Franz. Ugh. Watch what essentially become a 2-part B-level episode of the animated series, that justifies its R-rating with PG-13 cursing and cartoon blood.
In the comic Barbara Gordon is victimized and tortured and that drew criticism from some. Now we get 40 minutes more of Barbara Gordon being a whiny sidekick, falling for her boss (a tall dark and brooding man), complaining to her gay friend about her love life, quitting her job when things get too hard”¦ AND then getting victimized and tortured. So they flesh out her character by making her the worst of EVERY female stereotype. Ugh.
Starring: Badman & Cradle Robbin’, Bratgirl, Killgrave, and Six-Flags Gotham”¦ New title: Batgirl: Sex & the Gotham City (followed by The Killing Joke). Screen Junkies have over 5.6 million subscribers on YouTube and release new Honest Trailers every Tuesday.
