Shia LaBeouf Almost Reunited With David Ayer For ‘Suicide Squad’
  |  @   |

Say what you will about Shia LaBeouf, but the actor has had some pretty incredible roles in the past, and one of his best was in the World War II drama Fury. Directed by David Ayer, the film centered on a US tank crew that undertakes a deadly mission behind enemy lines where they are outnumbered and outgunned.

A few years after its release LaBeouf went on to do many artful projects while Ayer signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad. And somewhere in between that time, it seems that LaBeouf was offered to play a role in the film, a role that ultimately did not go to him. Find out which one below.

Variety was the first the reveal that LaBeouf was initially offered to play GQ Edwards, a role that eventually went to Scott Eastwood. In an exclusive profile of the actor, the Hollywood trade says as soon as Will Smith climbed aboard the film, the vision of character changed, and it seemed like it was better suited for Eastwood. Here is what LaBeouf had to say:

“The character was different initially. Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up. I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, “˜Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”

To be honest, Eastwood’s GQ Edwards character didn’t have much to do with the film if anything at all. So it is probably for the best that LaBeouf didn’t get the role. But it is not as though LaBeouf has not been a part of blockbuster films before. He was the lead actor in the first three Transformers films and starred alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

But it is strange to see that the role could change that much because, the addition of Will Smith. Granted Smith is a much bigger draw, the chemistry between the cast changed once Smith signed on. Even LaBeouf alluded to the fact that the film was a big investment for Warner Bros.

LaBeouf can next be seen in Man Down, a post-apocalyptic war thriller drama film directed by Dito Montiel, and American Honey, a drama written and directed by Andrea Arnold.
