J.A. Bayona Confirms ‘Jurassic World’ Will Be A Trilogy
  |  @   |

Last year, Colin Trevorrow‘s Jurassic World exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations by grossing $1.67 billion worldwide. As such, Universal Pictures announced that there would be a sequel. But with Trevorrow otherwise preoccupied with The Book Of Henry and Star Wars: Episode IX, the responsibility of directing the next Jurassic World would have to go to J.A. Bayona.

Bayona was named the director of the sequel a few months back, and while at the Toronto International Film Festival recently, the filmmaker confirmed that Jurassic World will be a direct sequel. See below for more on the story and who else will be involved in making the film.

Speaking with LRMOnline, Bayona said Trevorrow was still very much a part of making the film, despite his obligations to the two others he will be directing. Here’s the full quote:

I think they love The Impossible and The Orphanage””especially Colin (Trevorrow) loved those movies. It’s very interesting. The whole Jurassic World is a trilogy that Colin Trevorrow has envisioned. We’re writing the second chapter, and it’s very interesting where he’s leading the story. I grew up watching Steven Spielberg movies and I love those movies and the legacy, so it’s a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate. We are still six months ahead of shooting, and so far, so good. It’s very exciting right now.

That pretty much confirms that the new film will be a sequel and that Trevorrow has had one mapped out. It should be interesting to see how much control Bayona will have now that he will be behind a blockbuster tentpole. Trevorrow and Derek Connelly will be writing the script, and one has to wonder how Bayona will be able to express his voice and manage to fit it in its storytelling. The Orphanage and The Impossible has had their share of thrills and scares, but neither of which were on the scale of Jurassic World. Still, Trevorrow himself was an indie filmmaker before he got the call to direct Jurassic World, so maybe the same will happen to Bayona.

As of right now, we know very little about the sequel itself, but filming is expected to begin next February. But it comes as no surprise that a trilogy has been confirmed since the first Jurassic World was such a huge success. Universal might as well continue to follow up the franchise with more sequels while they still have the momentum.

Jurassic World 2 is tentatively scheduled for an June 22, 2018 release.
