The Current Status Of That Live Action ‘Star Wars’ TV Series
  |  @   |

Once upon a time it sounded like a live-action Star Wars TV series was within a couple of years of becoming a reality, with George Lucas himself penning 100 episodes. That was over a decade ago now. It’s a damn shame too, as fans were understandably excited by it being described as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space.”

A few years later there were whispers that casting for the show was going on. Another few years later and we heard about a possible title: Star Wars: Underworld. And then, you guessed it, another three years later Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said they still wanted to explore it.

Now a new update on the status of the series has been offered. It’s not much, but you can see where things stand below.

Disney Media Networks co-chairman and Disney/ABC Television president Ben Sherwood talked to The Hollywood Reporter. One of the questions asked was if there were still plans for a live-action Star Wars TV series. Here’s what he said:

The live-action Star Wars plan rests in the hands of [Walt Disney Studios chairman] Alan Horn, [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy and the great folks at Lucasfilm. Somewhere we hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks. But I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up too high. They have a lot of movies to make between now and then. We are deep into a very productive relationship with Lucasfilm making [Disney XD’s] Star Wars Rebels. And we are in ongoing conversations with them on what is the next Star Wars animated show.

So a series is still very much possible, but when it might happen is still up in the air. We could still be talking about this in another decade! And even if we do get one, it’s very likely not going to be that HBO-style “Deadwood meets The Sopranos” series. But if you’re into the animated Star Wars, it sounds like something new along those lines is much closer to happening.
