Warner Bros.’ Mad Max: Fury Road helped reinvigorate the Mad Max franchise with all its chrome glory. The film was praised almost unanimously by critics, but fell just a little bit short of box office expectations. Still, there are a couple of things to look forward to, like the recently announced Mad Max: Fury Road Black And Chrome Edition and now the newly rumored Mad Max: Fury Road prequel that is supposedly centered on Furiosa (Charlize Theron).
Check out the full story on the rumor below.
The Herald Sun was the first to report on the rumor of a Mad Max prequel that will center on Furiosa and most likely not feature its title character as the lead. Filming is said to take place in Australia where Thor: Ragnarok is currently filming and Aquaman will soon be filming.
Now we have to take this bit of news with a grain of salt since there is no official confirmation from Theron or director George Miller’s camp. Although Miller has said that there are two more sequels in development. Tom Hardy is reportedly signed on for two more sequels as well, one of which was titled Mad Max: Furiosa and the other was titled Mad Max: Wasteland. Originally, the former was actually supposed to be filmed back to back with Fury Road, but seeing as that never happened, it does open the door for Furiosa’s character to finally get her own film. The plan was to follow up Fury Road with Wasteland, so it’s not exactly clear what’s next.
But Furiosa was one of the best characters to come out of Fury Road, with many critics praising Theron’s performance as the character, so if WB were to follow up the film with a prequel, it would make sense that they would have one centered on her, and it will even be more interesting to see what kind of story they can craft to tie it all together.
To be honest, we can’t be sure if any of this is true considering that if it was, production on a sequel or prequel would have been in the works almost immediately after Fury Road‘s lukewarm success. The addition of six Oscar nominations would have been another convincing factor for WB. Not to mention that Miller has said that he wants to explore other options and that he is also rumored to be in talks to direct a sequel to Man Of Steel.
So we will take this story with a huge grain of salt since there isn’t enough evidence to support the claim that there will be a prequel to Fury Road. In the meantime, Mad Max: Fury Road Black And Chrome Edition will hit store shelves on December 6, 2016.
