‘Taxi Driver’ Hitting Theaters For 40th Anniversary Through Fathom Events

Martin Scorsese‘s Taxi Driver is coming back to the big screen for a limited run in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary.

In 1976, Scorsese introduced us to Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a deranged New York City cabbie who enjoyed pornographic films, stalking political candidates, and had a penchant for blondes. The film was gritty, intense, and violent, and Bickle became an anti-hero for the post-Nixon era. It garnered four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Robert De Niro), Best Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Score (Bernard Herrmann). The film was written by Paul Schrader, the first of his three collaborations with the acclaimed Oscar-winning director. Thanks to Fathom Events & Sony Pictures Entertainment, Taxi Driver is returning to U.S. theaters for two days only this October in preparation for its two-disc 40th anniversary edition Blu-Ray release on November 8, 2016.

De Niro is unforgettable as Bickle. An insomniac who drives his taxi at night interacting with other loud and crazy characters, his days only perk up when he meets a pair of women. First it’s Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a campaign worker for a would-be Senator. When his attempts to woo her go awry, he takes up interest in saving young prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster) from the clutches of her pimp, played here by a young Harvey Keitel. The film is perhaps one of the greatest portrayals of a descent into total madness. De Niro perfectly captures this, from his failed pursuits of Betsy to his classic monologues in front of a mirror to his final mohawk-clad bloodbath. His infamous “You talking to me?” was ranked 10th of all time on the American Film Institute’s list of greatest movie quotes, and the film itself placed 47th on AFI’s list of the 100 greatest American films.

Taxi Driver returns to U.S. theaters on Sunday, October 16th and Wednesday, October 19th, for screenings at 2:00pm and 7:00pm local standard time each day. The special presentation features 10-minutes of never before seen Q&A, filmed at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival with director Martin Scorsese, stars Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel, Cybill Shepherd, as well as writer Paul Schrader and producer Michael Phillips. While the film hits nearly 400 screens nationwide, those of us in New York City will find it special to see one of the cornerstones of New York cinema in the Big Apple again.
