Movie Adaptation Of Indie Game ‘Firewatch’ Being Developed
  |  @   |

We’ve seen lots and lots of big video games adapted into movies over the years, many of which end up not being very good. What we don’t see very often, is a much smaller indie game make an impact big enough to lead to it being turned into a movie. But one such indie game released earlier this year, a mystery adventure game titled Firewatch, looks to change all that.

It’s been announced that the game’s developer, Campo Santo, and film production company Good Universe have partnered up to develop both video games and movies that will bridge the two forms of entertainment. Their first project will be a movie based on Firewatch, which is actually the young Campo Santo’s first game.

Campo Santo co-founder Sean Vanaman had this to say about the announcement:

“When we met Good Universe we were floored by how they recognize, cultivate and produce incredible stories. It’s rare you meet another group that shares so many of your values and makes the process of creating things even more exciting. We can’t wait to see what we make together.”

Vanaman also wrote a full blog post on their official website talking more about the partnership and how it came to be, if interested in learning more.

Good Universe co-founder Joe Drake added:

“Finding extraordinary content is incredibly exciting, and with the Campo Santo team, we felt an immediate simpatico with their utterly beguiling storytelling and amazing creative instincts.”

The production company’s past titles include the comedies Neighbors and its sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and the recent horror hit Don’t Breathe. Before co-founding Good Universe, Drake was the president and co-COO of Lionsgate, which he steered toward building massive franchises such as The Hunger Games.

As for when we might see a Firewatch movie, it has only just entered into the early stages of development. A whole lot of work has to be done before a release window begins coming into focus.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, here’s a description:

Firewatch is a mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness, where your only emotional lifeline is the person on the other end of a handheld radio.

In Firewatch you play as a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor, a woman named Delilah, is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio “” and is your only contact with the world you’ve left behind.

But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the world, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making interpersonal choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

You can find a gameplay demo and some preview videos right here if you missed them.
