Ben Affleck Says His Batman Film Is Simply Titled ‘The Batman’… For Now
  |  @   |

Ben Affleck‘s standalone film is in pretty good hands, as not only is the actor reprising his role for the solo feature, he is also going to direct it using a script he co-wrote with Geoff Johns, who will also produce alongside Jon Berg. Though we know the major players and that the antagonist would be mercenary-for-hire Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello), the official title of the movie was largely unknown. Until now. During the press junket for The Accountant, Affleck said the title for his standalone Batman film would be The Batman.

More on the story below.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Affleck briefly talked about the title, which he believed was going to be The Batman:

“The movie I think is going to be called “˜The Batman’. At least that’s what we’re going with right now. I might change it”¦ That’s about all I got right now. We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it.”

Based on that statement, The Batman may not end up being the final title of the film, but perhaps more like a title for the press to use because “Batman Standalone Film” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, so get used to calling it The Batman until Affleck or Warner Bros. reveals something different. The simplicity of The Batman also takes away from the current superhero movie trend that uses subtitles, as most recently seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The film does share its title with a 2004 animated series, featuring the voice of Rino Romano at the title character.

But other than knowing what the title is, or at least having an idea of what it could be, we still don’t know much about the film itself. But Affleck has gone on record saying that The Batman would have an original story that borrows from the comics, and there have been rumors that a large number of villains from the Dark Knight’s Rogue Gallery could appear.

Unlike any of the other previous Batman films that have reused villains like The Joker, Two-Face, Bane, and anti-hero Catwoman, The Batman marks the first time that we will see Deathstroke playing a major role as a villain on film, though we are likely to first see him play a small role or just cameo in the upcoming Justice League.

The tentatively titled The Batman doesn’t have a precise release date yet, but Warner Bros. does have October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019 set aside for untitled DC Extended Universe projects.
