Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’ Scheduled For 2018 Release

Mulan

Last year, Disney announced that they would be developing a live-action reimagining of Mulan from a script written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (We’re the Millers) will produce.

It comes as no surprise that Disney would continue to adapt their animated classics given the huge box office successes of Maleficent, Alice In Wonderland, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. And now the studio has confirmed that Mulan will be hitting theaters on November 2, 2018. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says the movie is being fast-tracked for fall 2018 and the studio will be doing a global casting search for a Chinese actress to play the title female heroine.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World) will be brought in to rewrite the script, which the studio purchased last year. Disney describes Martin and Hynek’s script as “a jumping off point for a more nuanced and elaborate adaptation, combining the legendary Chinese ballad and the 1998 animated film.” Jason Reed will also join Bender and Spink in producing the retelling.

The animated film featured the voice of Ming-Na Wen as Mulan, the young heroine of the film who poses as a male soldier to prevent her ill father from being drafted into the army. She then trains to become one of the greatest soldiers in the Chinese army and helps them defeat the huns. It went on to gross over $300 million worldwide.

Disney has yet to announce a director for the movie, but with the film on the fast-track to production, we can expect to hear some more news in the coming weeks leading up to production. Should the studio stick with the release date, Mulan would be going up against Universal’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Nov. 19), Warner Bros.’ untitled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel (Nov. 16), and Disney’s Gigantic (Nov. 21)

Next year, Disney will be releasing their highly anticipated retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Other reimaginings that are currently developing include Pinocchio, Dumbo, Genie, Tinkerbell, Prince Charming, Rose Red, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword and the Stone, and Winnie the Pooh.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any new developments for Mulan and any of the other films.
