‘Blade Runner 2’ Confirmed Title Is ‘Blade Runner 2049’

One year from now, Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment will be releasing a sequel to Blade Runner to theaters, but we still know next to nothing about the film itself. But perhaps it would be best if we referred to Blade Runner 2 now by its actual newly revealed title — Blade Runner 2049. Check out the first image here below of director Denis Villeneuve, producer Ridley Scott, and film stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling together in one room.

The first Blade Runner, released in 1982, was set in the year 2019. So as the sequel title suggests, Blade Runner 2049 takes place 30 years after the events of the first film. In fact, that is all the information as the press release says “Story details are not being revealed.” The only bit of information that is offered is that film is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. No mention of what Gosling’s role is in the film, which only shrouds the sequel in more secrecy.

There is no telling what is happening in the photo or if the room where the photo was taken will be in the sequel. But there is a noticeable blaster next to Villeneuve’s elbow.

Despite the dystopian cyberpunk actioner aspect of Blade Runner, the film does explore some complex themes. So having Villeneuve direct the sequel couldn’t be any more perfect as the director is known to explore some complex themes in Sicario and the soon to be released Arrival. So it should be interesting how he incorporates his vision into a world that has been established by Scott.

Blade Runner 2049 also stars Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, Dave Bautista, Lennie James, David Dastmalchian, and Hiam Abbass. Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment will release the sequel into theaters on October 6, 2017.
