NYCC 2016: ‘The Great Wall’ Trailer Has Matt Damon Discovering A Great Secret

The Great Wall starring Matt Damon

Any normal film about The Great Wall of China would be otherwise been seen as a documentary or a dramatization of how the wall was built. But add a monster element to it, and it has all the makings of a blockbuster tentpole movie, especially if said film has cast a very marketable name headlining it, like Matt Damon. Universal and Legendary have released the second trailer for The Great Wall.

Check it out here below.

Ever since the first trailer came out, the film has drawn criticism for its “white savior” coming to China’s rescue premise. Even bits of the trailer try to paint Damon’s character as one seeking redemption for all the times he’s fought for greed. It’s a noble gesture, sure, but the idea is getting a bit tiresome. But, in its defense, the movie was made by a Chinese director Zhang Yimou, with Chinese money, and it is backed by Legendary Pictures – a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group — it has a large Chinese cast: Jing Tian, Hanyu Zhang, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang, Zheng Kai, Cheney Chen, Xuan Huang, Andy Lau, and was shot entirely in China.

Director Zhang Yimou spoke about the controversy surrounding the film saying he wants to “bring Chinese color and cultural background to the worldwide audience through a film language that they are familiar with.” In the same interview, he calls the blending of two different cultures of making movies “synergistic filmmaking,” adding that they are using “Hollywood filmmaking to introduce Chinese culture.”

That is an interesting argument to make. Despite that, Yimou’s directing style and vision is not lost as the visuals and action sequences are just great eye candy. We’ll just have to see if it will be enough to make us overlook the “white savior” aspect of the film.

Written by Carlo Bernard & Doug Miro and Tony Gilroy, based on a story by Max Brooks and Edward Zwick & Marshall Herskovitz, The Great Wall will hit theaters on February 17, 2017.

Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by one of the most breathtaking visual stylists of our time, Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. The first English-language production for Yimou is the largest film ever shot entirely in China. The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau.

The studios held a panel today for The Great Wall at New York Comic-Con today with stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal (Game Of Thrones), and Junkai Wang, so look for our on-site coverage of the event, as well as the press roundtables we attended.
