NYCC 2016: Screen Junkies Panel – Movie Fights & Honest Trailers
  |  @   |

For the second straight year, I spent a late night at New York Comic-Con watching the Screen Junkies gang. Screen Junkies currently sits at just under 5.7 million YouTube subscribers and is one of the preeminent places on the internet for geek culture. The room at NYCC was PACKED, with people standing in the back and alongside the walls. The site’s two biggest hits are Movie Fights and Honest Trailers. The event was emceed by Screen Junkies founder Andy Signore, and featured Dan Murrell, Spencer Gilbert, comic writer Marc Andreyko, Mark Ellis from Collider, and two fans who were competing against the Junkies in the Movie Fight rounds. The Movie Fights section was held as a one-on-one single elimination tournament and featured really interesting questions, and even better responses and arguments.

Round 1 – Make an existing movie better by replacing the lead with Batman – Marc Andreyko took the win with Adam West’s Batman playing the Richard Gere role in Pretty Woman, complete with POWs and ZAPs.

Round 2 – Wolverine vs. Deadpool – A close contentious battle won by last year’s defending champion, a fan named Jim who argued Wolverine based on his ability to regenerate from a single drop of blood, which was fact checked in real-time”¦ could the Screen Junkies host the next Presidential debate please?

Round 3 – Christopher Nolan vs. James Cameron – Another fan (Ashley) won the fight siding with Cameron arguing historical importance and money-making ability.

Round 4 – Which was better: Batman v Superman OR Suicide Squad? – A classic battle between Signore and Murrell went to Dan Murrell in support of BvS, though both admitted the films were flawed.

Round 5 – Best Movie New Yorker – A battle of bizarre choices saw Marc Andreyko reach the finals choosing King Kong over Agent J from Men In Black.

Round 6 – Best Movie Monster – Dan Murrell reached the finals successfully arguing for Freddy Krueger over the T-Rex from Jurassic Park.

Round 7 – Worst Superhero Movie Ever – Dan Murrell takes the NYCC Movie Fights crown arguing X-Men Origins: Wolverine over Marc Andreyko’s pick Spider-Man 3. Why I thought Dan won the argument, Spider-Man 3 is clearly a worse film in my opinion.

After that was done, they switched gears to Honest Trailers, playing this week’s entry, “Flash Seasons 1-2.” They talked about how complicated the editing process can be on these, especially for the TV-centric ones. Finally, they debuted a brand new Honest Trailer, this time for X-Men: Apocalypse, where they tear the movie and director Brian Singer up. I’m in the minority, but I loved that movie. Alternate new titles for the film included X-Men: Genisys, a reference to the highly unsuccessful Terminator sequel.

Screen Junkies Movie Fights go live Thursday afternoons, and they release a new Honest Trailers every Tuesday. You can watch even more geeks doing geeky stuff by subscribing to Screen Junkies Plus.
