When Sony inked a deal with Marvel Studios to share Spider-Man, it allowed the neighborhood friendly webslinger to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox. So when the character finally made his big MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, everyone got excited about where he’d get to go in future films, like Avengers: Infinity War. But before you get excited about that, it appears that Spider-Man may not appear in the major Marvel superhero ensemble after all.
Check out what Spider-Man actor Tom Holland had to say here below.
While promoting The Lost City Of Z, Holland spoke a little bit about Spider-Man, his place in the MCU, and potential sequels:
“My next project, I can’t tell you about, but we’ve just finished “˜Spider-Man’ and we’re talking about the second one and who the villain is going to be and where we’re going.”
Of course, they would be exploring a sequel before they would even be releasing Spider-Man: Homecoming. It would be more surprising if they didn’t. We’ll probably hear something more substantial about the sequel as we get closer to the release. If Sony does confirm a sequel, it is very likely we will see it hit theaters sometime in 2019 or 2020.
On the news surrounding Avengers: Infinity War, that is looking a bit more unclear. When talking to Variety, Holland offered a less-than-promising answer:
It’s all up in the air. I believe some sort of deal is in the mix, but I’m unclear as to what that deal is.
While it’s not the kind of answer we were all hoping for, Holland’s statement doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t be seeing Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War. When the deal was struck back in 2015, it said that Spidey would appear in Captain America: Civil War first, followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming. After that, Marvel and Sony would collaborate on a new creative direction for the webslinger. Sony would continue to finance, distribute, own, and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
That deal was struck back when Amy Pascal was head of Sony. So it should be interesting to see if new Sony CEO Tom Rothman has made any changes since he stepped in to replace her.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7th, 2017. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4th, 2018.
