Spoilers below for Ash vs Evil Dead

On Ash vs Evil Dead, last time we saw Ash (Bruce Campbell) he literally had his head up an ass. In maybe the most unbelievable idea ever concocted by the Evil Dead gang, Ash was dragged up the anal cavity of a dead carcass in the Elk Grove morgue. I got to watch that episode at NYCC and the poor sap next to me got legitimately sick and nearly threw up. I have no idea what they’re gonna come up with for an encore. Maybe forgotten in that one sh*tty scene, was that the Necronomicon ended up in the Delta and the car was stolen by a group of wise-cracking youth. Also Brock Williams (Lee Majors), Ash’s Dad, had a date go a little off when she turned out to be a deadite.

Well, the answer to how you top last week is answered partially pre-credits in Episode 2.3 “Last Call” when a girl finds the book in the Delta and reads from it. Her boyfriend’s hook-up session ends very badly. Ruby (Lucy Lawless) tries to organize a manhunt for the book, but Ash has other ideas.

“I can’t fart without tripping over that thing, and I fart a lot!”

Ash’s plan to get the book back is to reunite with old buddy Chet (Ted “Yes, Sam is my brother” Raimi) and concoct some of their old magic brew, Pink F*ck, a mix of liquors and ketamine. One drink and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) is tripping something crazy. Soon Ash and Chet are throwing a major party, trying to lure out the teens who stole his car. What he doesn’t know is they are under attack from the Evil Dead and we see fingers get hacked off, and hubcaps used to leave gaping holes in people.

At the party, Pablo (Ray Santiago) tries to compliment Kelly by saying he wishes he was more like her, but he makes her realize how alone she truly feels. Her parents were killed in Season 1, and she’s got only Ash and the crew to show her the way”¦ probably not where she anticipated her life would be at this point. While Ash’s rager continues, including an epic mechanical bull battle between father and son, the Delta is having its own rager, chasing down and murder the teens as if it’s Stephen King’s Christine.

We get some actual character-driven emotion in this episode. Kelly is having an existential crisis and finds comfort in the least likely person — Ruby. Meanwhile, Ash and his father have a realistic blowup where Brock confesses that he thinks Ash did in fact murder his friends in the cabin all those years ago. What Brock doesn’t know, is the lady friend he has for the night is, of course, a deadite. When Ash comes to the rescue, Lee Majors gets his Evil Dead baptism (blood shower), and we get a classic scene involving a chainsaw and a swirly.

Ash vs Evil Dead is not holding back and frankly I don’t know where they can go to up the ante. That is not a complaint, the show is f’n great. It continues to be laugh out loud funny, filled with cringe-inducing scenes of blood and gore and we’re starting to delve into who these characters are and see some split motivations. Kelly and Ruby as an all-lady demon-slaying duo kicks ass and provides new arcs for them. This season the characters are getting more developed and I am digging it. They all have their own individual struggles along with the group effort to eradicate evil.

Ash vs Evil Dead returns next Sunday night only on Starz. Download the Starz app now and get a free viewing trial.
