Last week on Gotham, it was a “very merry unbirthday” for Alice Tetch (Naian Gonzalez Norvind), and Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie). Jim could not shake the Mad Hatter’s (Benedict Samuel) spell, and kept trying to kill himself – Barnes (Michael Chiklis) saved him with a clunk on the head, and Lee (Morena Baccharin) with a voiceover of previous advice. The inevitable crazy confrontation ended with Alice’s death. Fake Bruce (David Mazouz) saved then kissed Selina (Camren Bicondova) , and real Bruce found out. Nygma and Butch (Cory Michael Smith and Drew Powell) struggled for Penguin’s (Robin Lord Taylor) favor. Penguin was elected mayor, and Barnes got infected with Alice’s tainted blood.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.5 “Mad City: Anything for You” review: There is a victory parade in Penguin’s honor. He is feeding the homeless in soup kitchens, opening schools… with a grim Butch and a happy Nygma. Penguin talks to the statue of the mother.

Nygma: “She would be proud. What more could someone ask for?”
Penguin: “Someone to share it with.”

He announces that the city will be safe just as a red hood gang shoots up the statue and knocks off the head. Penguin vows revenge. Nygma visits the GCPD, and gleefully rubs his presence in everyone’s face, as the mayor’s liaison in the Red Hood case.

Barnes is studying the blood reports of the Tetch case. He knows something is up with that drop of blood. Barnes asks Lee about the tests on Alice Tetch’s blood. One of the rats chewed through steel cages and killed the other 2 rats. That is NOT a good sign.

Bruce visits Jim, and wants to hire him to find Ivy Pepper. Really funny moment between them when Bruce denies that he and Selina are “a thing.” They commiserate about women. And Ivy didn’t kill that guy! I really thought he was dead. Bullock (Donal Logue) gets a lead, but says it’s a twenty-something that had Ivy’s sweater. At the party, Bruce sees Selina (“a sign”) and Selina does NOT see Ivy.

Lee tells Jim her engagement announcement, and seems quite disappointed that he does not react much. That’s your choice, Dr. Thompkins. She then slaps Nygma in the face. She says she is not afraid, but she should be. That guy is a loon.

Holy Moly! I did NOT expect Butch to be the boss of the Red Hood gang. Barbara and Tabitha (Erin Richards and Jessica Lucas) find out like 3 seconds later that it’s Butch. Man oh man. But Tabitha has a soft spot for Butch, plus he’ll owe her. He takes out his own gang just as a happy Penguin and a suspicious Nygma show up.

Nygma confronts Butch about his cunning, and wants him to kill Penguin so they can rule Gotham. Butch doesn’t want to. But they hold Tabitha hostage. He shouldn’t worry about that girl though. That one can take care of herself.

But it’s a triple-cross. Oh, I cannot give everything away… I’ll just laugh gleefully like Barbara and say, “Best party ever!”

Bruce tells Selina of his feelings. She yells at him, then kisses him. He’s confused.

Tabitha goes to save Butch. Barnes gets veiny-eyed when he hears he broke out. I am looking forward to the evolution of Captain Barnes.

The Mad Hatter is madder than ever.

This episode was a banana sundae with crazy on top. What fun! Every second was a “I can’t believe that just happened” moment. Is it only episode 5?

Are they setting us up for a Nygma/Penguin romance? They do fit well together.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

  1. I liked Jim’s story, what little there was, in the larger and smaller sense, although I preferred his scene with Lee to the Valerie ones, where JC seemed unreadable and awkward. I was hoping that if Lee was going to be angry or vengeful, it would be for Jim and their child and those losses. Maybe it was sloppy writing and the “Kristen Kringle” was meant to cover the entire tragedy and crimes. As for the rest, I was disappointed in how predictable and slow it was and would have forwarded through. Onward to next week.
