‘Star Wars’: Donald Glover Cast As Lando Calrissian In Han Solo Film

This deal is getting better all the time.

Back in August, we reported that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the upcoming Star Wars Story spin-off that follows a young Han Solo (to be played by Alden Ehrenreich), were looking at Donald Glover, star of Community, Atlanta, and The Martian and the Grammy-winning rap artist known as Childish Gambino, for the role of Han’s fellow charming scoundrel Lando Calrissian.

Today, Lucasfilm has officially announced that Glover will indeed play Calrissian in the as-yet-untitled feature.

Lord and Miller expressed their enthusiasm at their casting decision in a statement:

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

I may not be terribly excited at the prospect of a Star Wars prequel focusing on a young Han Solo in the days before he met the Skywalker sibs, joined the Rebellion, and fathered Sith fanboy Kylo Ren, but this is some pretty impressive casting. Glover is a multi-talented star on the rise with talent, charisma, and wit to spare. He’ll make a perfect Lando, and I look forward to seeing what crazy cosmic adventures he and Ehrenreich get into in the spin-off flick written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan.

Here’s more about the Han Solo standalone film:

Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich “” previously cast as Han Solo “” in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld “” years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.

The “young Han Solo” Star Wars Story is set to open sometime in 2018. Who’s up for a game of Sabaac?
