Doug Liman Says ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Is A Sequel That’s Also A Prequel

Edge Of Tomorrow Trailer Tom Cruise

Despite Edge Of Tomorrow‘s tepid box office performance, most would agree that the time-traveling actioner was thoroughly exciting. Directed by Doug Liman, the film starred Tom Cruise was a soldier with the ability to experience time loops, that sends him back to the day preceding the battle every time he dies. He then teams up with Emily Blunt, who helps him use his ability to its full potential. Because the film eventually found its audience through word of mouth and home entertainment, Warner Brothers gave the green light for the sequel, which according to Liman will also be a prequel.

More below.

Speaking to Collider, Liman spoke a little bit about Edge Of Tomorrow 2:

“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing””much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film””and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

Considering the idea of a time loop is what got audiences hooked on the film in the first place, the idea of the sequel also being a prequel isn’t far-fetched. In fact, it makes a lot of sense to take that approach. It’s a refreshing take on the modern-day sequel – if executed properly.

While Liman isn’t exactly a fan of doing sequels, the filmmaker says that he has had some ideas about doing one for Edge Of Tomorrow for quite some time:

“I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like “˜Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”

Even if the idea is there and screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have already penned the script, it will be a while before the film actually heads into production. Cruise is currently working on Mission: Impossible 6 with Edge Of Tomorrow scribe Christopher McQuarrie, while Blunt will be busy with Mary Poppins Returns. Liman is busy as well preparing for Justice League Dark.

We’ll keep you up-to-date on the progress of both Edge Of Tomorrow and Justice League Dark, both of which have yet to reveal their release dates.
