James Gunn Directed Some Future Stan Lee MCU Cameos
  |  @   |

A common staple of any film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the Stan Lee cameo. This cameo has led to the popular theory that the Marvel Comics co-creator is, in fact, The Watcher, better known as Uatu, an all-mighty being stationed on Earth to monitor the activities of other species. Though this theory was disproven, we are still going to get to see Lee cameo in MCU films for as long as he is alive. But the guy isn’t getting any younger, and flying from set to set for just a cameo wouldn’t make any sense. So he’s already filmed his cameos for the next four MCU films. But did you know that the man who helped make all of that possible was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn?

More on the story below.

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed this little tidbit to an audience at Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest over the weekend.

“It’s a big deal for a 93-year-old man to go to a movie set and spend a day shooting,” said Derrickson. He added, “James shot four cameos with Stan in one day.” In addition to that, Gunn texted the director frames, and asked if the shot was right?

Even Gunn commented on the news, saying that shooting all four Stan Lee cameos in one day was definitely one of the most fun times I’ve ever had on set. Here’s what he said on his official Facebook account:

There are few people in this world I love and admire more and have more fun with than Stan Lee. Even though he does love breaking my, and everyone else’s balls (I introduced him to Tom Holland for the first time and he said, “Everyone says you’re great! Personally, I don’t see it.”). Although, to be honest, I think I only did THREE cameos – one was shot by someone else. And my third probably isn’t what you think it is…

If you’ve seen the Doctor Strange cameo, it was one of MANY versions I shot on the day, and Scott Derrickson chose the final one. If I’m writing for Stan, why give him one line when I can give him a thousand? I just kept throwing lines at him one after the other, until we were all doubled over with laughter. Someday, after you’ve seen the movie, maybe Marvel Studios will let me share some of those with you.

And hopefully you’ll see the movie next week – in IMAX, where it’s definitely best seen!

Have a great weekend, friends.

So looking at the schedule, if Gunn shot all four cameos, that means we can expect to see Lee in Doctor Strange, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. As aforementioned, it makes more sense to get the cameos out of the way in one shot than it is to film four individual ones for one single day. That has quite a toll on a man of Lee’s age.
