Last week on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, they ran into The Justice Society of America in 1942. And by “ran into” I mean “got captured by.” Nate Haywood (Nick Zano) was giddy because he met his grandfather, Commander Steel (Matthew MacCaull), and tried to prove the familial connection through his dog-tags, and personal stories. We saw two of our favorite presently dead villains in the past, Eobard Thawne and Damian Darhk (Matt Letscher and Neal McDonough), in cahoots with each other and the Nazis, for nukes and a super serum. Sarah (Caity Lotz) tried to kill Darhk to prevent Laurel’s death, and Thawne ended up killing Rex Tyler (Patrick J. Adams), spurring Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) to blame Mick (Dominic Purcell).

Spoilers below.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 2.3 “Shogun” review: Ray injects Nate with Nazi super serum to save his life. That works out, as Vixen is running wild knocking out Legends until Nate turns to steel and KO’s her. She believes one of the Legends (namely Mick) was the time traveler who killed Rex Tyler, but we know that was Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne. Sara convinces her that they are allies, and just when she mentions how professional they are, Ray and Nate have a training accident, that sends them into the space time continuum and to 17th century feudal Japan.

Ray immediately gets excited about meeting samurai, but they are of course less than thrilled, and take him to the Shogun. Nate, meanwhile, is found by a beautiful Japanese woman and her rural family. Turns out, she is the promised bride of the Shogun. He tries to step in and be their hero… after all, he can turn his body to steel, but unfortunately he doesn’t know how to turn it on. The rescue mission is not going well for the rest of the Legends. Vixen and Heat Wave are hilarious in their constant bickering over real life ninjas versus movie ninjas.

As Mick, Sara, and Vixen head to Japan for a rescue, Professor Stein and Jefferson (Victor Garber and Franz Drameh) find Rip Hunter’s secret room on the Wave Rider. Jefferson’s response: “If I learned one thing from LOST, it’s that you don’t go around opening secret hatches.” They uncover a message from Barry Allen (2056) that is so super secret, they aren’t supposed to know. Back in Japan, the gang find Ray but the Shogun has procured the Atom suit. They find Nate, but he convinces them to stay and defend the village from the now Atom-powered Shogun.

There is some really good character development here, as Ray must learn to be a hero without the suit, while Nate has to figure out how to channel his powers. In the end, the Legends battle the samurai of the evil Shogun in a fairly epic battle sequence. There is also a pretty neat easter egg concerning who the Japanese family really are in the DCEU. All in all, this was another awesome episode, full of fun scenes, quotable dialogue, and pop culture references for the geeks out there. Who doesn’t like Mick Rory spouting hidden Star Wars lines, and Nate discussing his sensei, Yoda?

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns next Thursday night at 8:00pm ET on the CW.
