Disney Now Making Live Action ‘Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs’

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

It’s been announced that Disney is now developing a live-action re-telling of their animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but you already knew that. Or at least assumed it, considering Disney is making new live-action takes on most of their animated movies.

Erin Cressida Wilson, who has worked on the screenplays for Secretary, Chloe, and most recently The Girl on the Train, is in negotiations to write the new Snow White. Marc Platt (Mary Poppins Returns) will produce.

New music for the new take on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale will also be a part of the movie. Disney has hired songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to work on the project. The duo wrote the original musical Dear Evan Hansen, which debuted Off-Broadway earlier this year and is set to make its Broadway debut later this month. They also recently wrote lyrics for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, and penned all the songs for the Fox musical The Greatest Showman on Earth starring Hugh Jackman.

What’s much more surprising than the announcement of a live-action Snow White is that it took this long for the project to be confirmed. It’s already been reported that Disney is developing a live-action movie about Snow White’s sister Rose Red—who’s not one of their classic animated characters—so the fact that a movie based on their first and one of their biggest animated features is only just now being announced is unexpected. Perhaps one of the reasons behind the delay was the recent live-action Snow White projects Snow White and the Huntsman and its sequel from Universal Pictures, and Mirror Mirror from Relativity Media.

In addition to the live-action Disney movies we’ve already seen such as Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and The Jungle Book, other live-action projects currently being developed include The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Genie, Tinkerbell, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword and the Stone, Winnie the Pooh, and the next to be released, Beauty and the Beast.
