Spoilers below for Ash vs Evil Dead

Last week we met Baal (Jeff Tobeck), the father of the demon spawn that Ash (Bruce Campbell) and the gang have been battling since last season. Baal has a knack for hiding in other people’s skin… literally. After getting arrested by his old rival, Sheriff Emery (Stephen Lovatt), everyone converges at the jail. Ash’s compatriots, Ruby (Lucy Lawless), Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), and Pablo (Ray Santiago) are joined by the Sheriff’s family, Linda (Michelle Hurd), who happens to also be Ash’s old flame, and their daughter Lacey (Pepi Sonuga). Baal messes with their minds before Ash and Ruby team up to shred a deadite in typical graphic fashion. The real story though is poor Pablo. His body is turning against him, his skin becoming the Necronomicon… although that may be what’s necessary to inevitably defeat Baal.

Spoilers for this week’s episode of AvED:

Fans of the original Evil Dead are in for a treat with this episode. Whereas last week’s episode focused on the jail, this week it’s Ashy Slashy’s house. With Ruby and Lacey trying to help Pablo upstairs, the Sheriff and Baal lead the town to Ash’s downstep, guns blazing. Kelly and Linda hold them back, Kelly with a machine gun.

“Back off, or I will F*CK YOUR FACES WITH BULLETS!!!” – Kelly

Dana DeLorenzo is so badass, they need a new word. Meanwhile, Ruby’s plan of hastening the process of turning Pablo into a living Necronomicon backfires as Pablo gets possessed Exorcist style, and channels the Evil Dead itself to the house. And in a absolutely glorious HOLY SHIT moment for fans… this means a return of Cheryl! That’s right, Ash’s sister, the first one ever taken by the Evil Dead after a rapey encounter with the woods. And better than that, it’s Ellen Sandweiss, the original actress!

“I hate to rain on anyone’s parade, but Cheryl, you’re not supposed to be here. You died after being branch-banged by a demon tree thirty years ago.” There are some lines that induce spit takes, that was one of them. Of course, dragged in the middle is poor Chet (Ted Raimi), Cheryl’s old boytoy who is now a pawn as Ash once again has to defeat and kill his sister. With a town full of haters trying to blast down Ash’s doors, and poor Pablo being torn apart inside upstairs, Ash’s battle against the Evil Dead rages through the house, including plenty of callbacks to the films.

This is what this show is about. Maybe more than any show on television, Ash vs Evil Dead is a love letter to its intense and devoted fanbase. This episode was all about giving the fans an all-time moment. The only way I can describe this show is “Balls to the Wall.” It never slows down, never gets old, and always hits all the right, bloody spots. And it’s still about the characters who continue to somehow infuse emotion into this madness. There’s one scene between Kelly and Pablo that nearly made me tear up, which in turn made me mock myself for almost tearing up during Ash vs Evil Dead.
