‘Project Wight’: First Look At New Game From Former ‘Battlefield’ Developer (Video)

Recently a sneak peek video was released for Project Wight, the code name for the first game from indie developer The Outsiders.

But while they are an indie developer—with only a little over a dozen people working there at the moment—their ambition is large. Their debut game is an open-world RPG set in an early viking-era alternate history. But you do not play as a viking, as you might expect from that brief description. Instead, you play as one of the last of a species of creatures being hunted and killed by those vikings. In it you will play as both a young creature, which allows you to be more stealthy and elusive, and a more mature creature, which will allow you to exact brutal, bloody revenge on those responsible for the slaughter of your kind.

Both of these gameplay levels are teased in the sneak peek video, which can be seen below.

One of the founders of the developer is David Goldfarb, who was a lead designer at DICE working on games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 and was lead designer and game director on Overkill Software’s Payday 2. Co-founding The Outsiders with him was fellow former Battlefield developer Ben Cousins.

Goldfarb walks you through the gameplay demo below and has spoken to Eurogamer about the project a couple of times. Back in February he explained that he’s always been a fan of RPGs, but this is his first time really making one:

“It’s my first stab at [an RPG] – or my first real stab, I should say. I’ve done it kind of informally at a lot of places I’ve worked… to much chagrin,” he laughs. “I have a certain way of working that’s not the best way… it’s just how it is.

So now at least it’s in the right context I’m doing this. I’ve loved RPGs all my life and have been shoehorning elements of them into games I’ve made over the years with lesser or more success. This is an opportunity, anyway.”

The concept has actually been rattling around Goldfarb’s brain for a while now, inspired by an alternate take on the tale of Beowulf:

“Almost the genesis of this project was, 20 years ago, when I read John Gardner’s Grendel, which tells the Beowulf epic but written from the point of view of the monster.

Most of my life has been spent feeling like I don’t understand a lot of perspectives, except that I always side with the ‘other’. When I read Grendel, it was affecting to me personally and I thought I’d love to do something with it one day.

It just so happened that as time wore on and I got more and more frustrated with humans,” he laughs, “it has become something I’m able to make.”

Goldfarb also ensures that the game isn’t all about violence against these humans who have killed off your species, and that there will be more to the game which will be shown at a later date.

The game is currently being developed for PC, with hopes of it also seeing a release on consoles.

For now, enjoy this first peek at Project Wight.
