‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’: Tom Holland Talks Contract, Zendaya Answers MJ Questions, and More
  |  @   |

It’s hard to believe that Spider-Man is actually a part of the MCU. But here we are, and after Tom Holland delivered a fantastic performance as the Webslinger in Captain America: Civil War, we can look forward to Spider-Man: Homecoming with enthusiasm and joy. Part of that comes from the fact that Marvel Studios had a hand in creating the character to fit into the MCU narrative by giving his standalone film John Hughes vibes. This version of Spider-Man takes the character back to its comic book roots where Peter Parker is a high school student who is trying to balance out his life as a teenager while still being a hero.

Being a part of the MCU family means that you get to appear in other films outside your own. Whether that means being a part of a larger ensemble like The Avengers or making a simple cameo, Marvel gives their actors a multi-picture contract that gives them the chance to play around in just more than their own sandbox. And now we know just how many films Holland will appear in. According to a new report, the actor will appear in a total of six films. In other Spider-Man: Homecoming related news, Zendaya side-steps around those annoying Mary Jane Watson questions, and Michael Keaton is finally confirmed to be playing Vulture. Check out all these stories below.

Holland tells THR that he is signed on to appear in at least six Marvel movies. Here’s what he had to say:

“They give you options and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers. I’m unclear as to which movies though. I do know I have three Spider-Man [appearances in other] movies and three solo movies contracted. But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it. They’re very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other.”

So other than his three standalone films, the three other appearances could mean cameos in other Marvel films and/or a role in Avengers: Infinity War or its untitled sequel. If he were to cameo in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, or Captain Marvel, it would probably be in an after credits scene that would tease a completely different movie. But that is just pure speculation. As to where he might show up, your guess is as good as ours.

Moving on. Zendaya’s character has been going by the name Michelle since the actress’s casting. However, this hasn’t stopped a few fans from speculating that the name is actually a front, and that Zendaya is actually playing Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s love interest in the comics. Even though she drops a few similarities to her comic book counterpart, the actress says she isn’t playing MJ:

“My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like “˜My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don’t really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

Finally, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says (or he may have let slip) that Michael Keaton is playing The Vulture. Either way, since it is coming from the man up top, we’ll take it as a confirmation. Here’s what he told the Toronto Sun:

“We’ve had a wish list and most of them in the near-term are coming together. Cate Blanchett is playing Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Michael Keaton’s Vulture in Spider-Man is something. And of course, finally, we’re showcasing Josh Brolin’s Thanos [in Avengers: Infinity War]. We’re looking forward to that very much.”

The Vulture remained as one of the top villains to face Spider-Man in Homecoming, and pretty soon fans started to connect the dots when Keaton was cast in the role as a villain. Though there were hints that he could play the Tinkerer, it seemed more likely that Spidey would face one of his top-tier villains. Now that the actor has been confirmed to play the role, we can finally look forward to a trailer, which will hopefully be released before the end of the year.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
