Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell

Despite the current whitewashing controversy that surrounds Ghost in the Shell, eager fans are very anxious to see if the film can justify the casting, and break the long-running reputation that live-action adaptations of popular animes are always bad. Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the live-action adaptation of this fan-favorite manga and anime. Starring Scarlett Johansson as Major, the film is set in a futuristic Tokyo, where a security force is tasked with stopping a hacking extremist from destroying a highly advanced cybernetic technology corporation.

Check out the full trailer below.

The trailer made its debut over in Japan where a select group of journalists were invited to attend the release premiere.

Not only does this film have to overcome the whitewashing controversy, but the fact that it is an adaptation of a beloved anime also adds to the weight. Many hold the title in high regard, and turning it into a live-action version is a lot harder than it looks, especially since other popular live animes have failed to live up to fans’ expectations. But here we may have something to look forward to.

As far as the production goes, it looks like Rupert Sanders didn’t want to make a direct live-action adaptation. The cinematography and set pieces look gorgeous, and the action sequences look like an amped-up version of The Matrix films, which oddly enough drew inspiration from Ghost in the Shell. It may even have the harshest critics believing that this live-action version could be a hit.

Just in case you were wondering about the music, that is Ki: Theory’s cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.”

The film also stars Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Beat Takeshi, Juliette Binoche, Kaori Momoi, and Rila Fukushima.

Ghost in the Shell opens on March 31st, 2017.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for the film:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a-special-ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
