Spoilers below for Ash vs Evil Dead

Last week’s Ash vs Evil Dead saw the epic return of sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) and she was conjured through Pablo’s Necronomicon-scarred body. With Ash (Bruce Campbell) and the gang trapped in his old house, and an angry mob outside, Ash is forced to battle Cheryl again, while Ruby (Lucy Lawless) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) try to help Pablo (Ray Santiago), who is being ripped apart physically and mentally. When Ash finally kills Cheryl in spectacular class Evil Dead fashion, the townsfolk realize he may not having been full of crap about the whole demon thing, but before he can celebrate, Baal (Joel Tobeck) knocks him out.

Episode 2.7 “Delusion” should be called “Ash Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Ash wakes from dreams of the Evil Dead in a dank mental ward with Baal as his psychiatrist. Ash is told he’s been here since committing the murders in the cabin all those years ago, but he sees through the rouse. “The only person who scrambles my brain, pal, is me, by doing the fun stuff, like drinking glue and sniffing booze!” Baal tortures Ash with electro shock, and worse”¦ puppets all trying to convince him to destroy the book which has plagued him for 30+ years.

All the gang are there. Kelly is a mental patient, and Dana DeLorenzo looks like she was pulled of the set of Cuckoo’s Nest. Pablo is an orderly, Lucy a nurse, and even poor Chet (Ted Raimi) shows up to get tortured alongside Ash. And Chet got his heart ripped out by deadite Cheryl last week. Of course the episode doesn’t hit it fullest stride until Ash and the puppet bond. “That’s disgusting, but I can’t be mad because that’s exactly what I would’ve said.” After breaking out Kelly, puppet Ash wants the hook up”¦ “What the Fragile Rock is that thing!?”

Before they can escape, things get dark. Ash is confronted with the reality he may have actually become the psychotic killer everyone assumes he is. But this is Ash Williams we’re talking about, so we’re left wondering if he’s being used by Baal”¦ or if Ash is using him.

This was yet another terrific episode. The past three episodes have all used minimal sets, and made the most of them. We’ve gone from bar to house to mental ward and yet all they need is to have the actors let loose. Dana DeLorenzo played a phenomenal mental patient and nobody in the business could pull talking to a hand puppet better than Bruce Campbell. Watching the actors dabble in other characters was so much fun. And Joel Tobeck totally evokes memories of a younger Brad Dourif both in his look and manic facial expressions.

Will Ash destroy the book? Is Pablo the book? Wait”¦ does that mean Ash will destroy Pablo? Ash vs Evil Dead returns next Sunday on Starz with all the answers.
